It's really difficult to find a decent, good-value hostel in Zurich, so I was quite happy when I came across reviews of this hostel and it seemed quite reasonably priced. Well, there were good things and bad things about it.
The main positive is that staff were really friendly and helpful, this always makes a huge difference when staying in a hostel. The bar downstairs was a nice place to meet people and they give you a free drink each night to encourage mixing, nice idea. The rooms were basic, but fine, and had nice large lockers. The location was in a party area, which is a good or a bad thing depending on who you are, not as nice as places in the old town district, but also a convenient short walk from the main train station. The breakfast was good.
The main problems when I stayed was the cleanliness. I'm normally not too fussy about cleanliness but the shared bathroom was just unclean the whole time we were there (2 days), particularly there was a lot of hair everywhere and in the drains, gross. I thought maybe we were just sharing with some particularly, er, messy, individual, but it never really improved much during the stay, so I wasn't not very impressed. The shower was really lousy, it didn't have a wall bracket so you just had to hold it over yourself, makes washing one's hair very difficult, is it really that difficult to put in a wall bracket? Also the bathroom seems to have been poorly planned; there's a seperate room with sinks, but the one toilet for our floor was in the same room as the shower, so whenever someone was in the shower you had to wait or go down to the pub. Funnily, the pub bathroom was much cleaner than the one on our level, even late on Saturday night. Towels were free but were a mixed bunch, most quite small, and all the white ones had stains. And finally there was a lot of noise from the street at night, as you might expect.
If I stayed in Zurich again I would probably try my luck at another hostel....
