“Not that impressed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

It's really difficult to find a decent, good-value hostel in Zurich, so I was quite happy when I came across reviews of this hostel and it seemed quite reasonably priced. Well, there were good things and bad things about it.
The main positive is that staff were really friendly and helpful, this always makes a huge difference when staying in a hostel. The bar downstairs was a nice place to meet people and they give you a free drink each night to encourage mixing, nice idea. The rooms were basic, but fine, and had nice large lockers. The location was in a party area, which is a good or a bad thing depending on who you are, not as nice as places in the old town district, but also a convenient short walk from the main train station. The breakfast was good.
The main problems when I stayed was the cleanliness. I'm normally not too fussy about cleanliness but the shared bathroom was just unclean the whole time we were there (2 days), particularly there was a lot of hair everywhere and in the drains, gross. I thought maybe we were just sharing with some particularly, er, messy, individual, but it never really improved much during the stay, so I wasn't not very impressed. The shower was really lousy, it didn't have a wall bracket so you just had to hold it over yourself, makes washing one's hair very difficult, is it really that difficult to put in a wall bracket? Also the bathroom seems to have been poorly planned; there's a seperate room with sinks, but the one toilet for our floor was in the same room as the shower, so whenever someone was in the shower you had to wait or go down to the pub. Funnily, the pub bathroom was much cleaner than the one on our level, even late on Saturday night. Towels were free but were a mixed bunch, most quite small, and all the white ones had stains. And finally there was a lot of noise from the street at night, as you might expect.
If I stayed in Zurich again I would probably try my luck at another hostel....

It was tough finding a backpacker hostel in Zurich. This city is expensive and has little to offer to Backpackers. Langstrasse is a happening area in Zurich (also a red light area, which we dint know), lots of bars around. Around the time we went, there was a festival on, we got stuck in traffic and found a parking only 2 km away. It was raining and we were dragging our luggage through the festival - full of people drinking and dancing in the streets. There is a cafe below the hostel, and there are live music gigs happening all the time. We met some people there and were surprised by the friendliness of Swiss people. A chap asked me if i had any dope to sell, because i was wearing a turban and beard, and he had seen some tv show in which we people sell drugs! I laughed and bought him a beer instead! The hostel itself is very neat and clean and comfortable to stay in. You might have to que up for the shared toilet, which can be a pain.

Room Tip: Not recommended for families.

One of my favorite hostels. Live music in the bar, incredibly friendly staff, a free drink for every night you stay in the hostel, and a very lovely free breakfast. A total steal for such an expensive place like Zurich!!

Stayed here for 3 nights back in September and it was good for a hostel. The check in/lobby is downstairs at the bar and you get a free drink each night which was great. They also had live music every night so there were lots of people around if you like to socialize. The rooms were very basic but clean. My biggest complaint is that there was only 1 bathroom on our floor! 1 bathroom for over 10 people??? I had to shower in the evening just to get in there and the waits in the morning just to brush your teeth were very long. The area felt totally fine to us, we had no problems so don't let that scare you. I will say though, that we did not really like Zurich very much as a city. One one side of the water, you have "rich" Zurich- very expensive restaurants, cars, shops like Gucci, Prada, Chanel etc, very elegantly dressed people..then you cross the water and the other side of town is drug dealers, people from different ethnicities, and lots and lots of sex clubs. The two sides of Zurich are so opposite from each other, it was kinda wierd. And Zurich is Insanely expensive!!!!!! We are average income people and could not believe how much it cost just to go for a few drinks somewhere. Langstars is even expensive for just a low cost hostel but it is at least affordable for the average person. And breakfast was included which was nice.

We had quite an experience arriving here. It was raining heavily and there were no free car parking spaces available nearby. Had to park the car some 2 kms away and got drenched in the rain walking back. Once we reach the place, we were overwhelmed to see that it was FILLED with people. we realised that the ground floor has a little pub and the hostels were above. took us quite a while to figure out who was in charge and get to our dorms. The dorms are pretty basic, small, functional, not too clean and just right for the backpacker.
But we ended up having a lot of fun. Seeing us drenched, we were offered 2 drinks on the house and innumerable people would walk up and chat up with you. We ended up spending the whole night not going to our dorms! The staff are damn helpful and the pub has quite a few live performances as well.
considering how expensive Zurich is, this is a really good cheap option. But be aware that this is strictly backpackers only!

Everybody says its a dodgy street that's unsafe but I think as long as you leave the people alone nothing will happen to you. Had an unforgettable New Year's Eve at Langstars thanks to the guys who do such a great job keeping the bar running and the place clean. Cheapest place to stay in Zurich and it's not like any regular hostel because of the friendly staff. One thing is the drinks are too pricey but I guess that's part of Welcome to Zurich the city with ridiculously high prices.

nice lil pub with decent life performances offers very improvised beds in shared rooms.
One of the rooms you share with an unseen amount of 3 different species of bugs.
I killed 6 of them in 20 minutes.
the walls are full of bug poop.

Tried to sleep on the floor, from where I watched the bugs crawling out of the walls.

They are very fond of their very normal breakfast.

Paying 45 Euros for this is insane!

Very awkward area, dangerous at night!

Room Tip: any room outside this place
