The Fraumunster Church dates back to 853 AD as an abbey and then the church was inaugurated in 1250 AD. It is located on the banks of the Limmat River not far from Lake Zurich. While the exterior of the church is not spectacular looking as other European churches, the treasure of the church is the Jewish artist Marc Chagall stained glass windows. The stained glass windows are best viewed in the morning with the sun shining on them; the windows depict different scenes from the Old Testament and various other scenes from the Bible. The colors of the stained glass windows are vivid and each has its own meaning. Next to the church is a cloister containing some beautiful fresco paintings by Paul Bodmer. The church is one of the sites in Old Town one must visit inside and out. The small archway on the exterior of the church was used in the Middle Ages to limit self-indulgence of extravagant clothing-the test was one had to be able to walk through the small archway and if not; their clothes were deemed to decadent and women were fined. You can almost see the spire of the church anywhere in Old Town and use it to get your bearings.

Even on a cloudy day the beautiful Chagall stained glass windows were a treat to see.
The self- guided tour includes a walk thru the catacombs. We returned on Sunday for a beautiful Reformed service with the sun shining brilliantly thru the windows. Bach on the organ is fitting

Fraunmünster is very well known for the beautiful Chagall windows, but is also worth a visit to see the crypta and rest of the church. For some silent moments

I love sitting in the stillness of the church soaking up and appreciating the Chagall windows and rosette. You can sit for as long as you like and enjoy them. Well-worth a visit.

However, this time I was surprised that you had to pay to get in. I hadn't before.
