We went on Christmas day.
We had the best pumpkin soup, however we did not enjoy anything of the rest. The mixed salat was boring, the condon blue nothing special and the rib eye as well (if you choose this DO NOT forget to tell them how you want the meat to be cooked...they cook it by default rare without asking you).
Very very expensive for what they offer (we paid around 80euros for the above plus water). The location is good since it is located in the old city.

On a cold early December Sunday we took some visitors to Zurich to one of our favorite restaurants in the old City. We've been there many times and have always loved the traditional Swiss dishes they served. But what a difference this time. The service was as pleasant as usual but the food was just poor. We recommended Kalbs-Cordon Bleu and Kalbs-Geschnetzeltes nach "Zürcherart" to our friends, two of their house specialities and at CHF36 they are not cheap. But in the past the cooking of these classics in this restaurant has been sensational. Alas this time it was all different. The Cordon Bleu was overcooked and presentation sad. The Geschnetzeltes was just poor all around, from quality to taste to presentation to warmth. I wouldn't say they were bad, I think you could get worse, but after such good experiences we were both disappointed and embarrassed in front of our guests. When we expressed our dismay to the waitress as she apologised for a forgotten side dish, we were told that indeed the chef had changed and apologies were offered. The meal for four people, which also included four forgettable soups to start but a nice red wine, came to almost CHF250 so buyer beware I think. There are certainly nicer dining rooms in Zurich and now we'd say nicer kitchens, at least until this restaurant kitchen improves.

In the restaurants defence after paying the bill we were offered complimentary coffee and liqueurs. But all too little too late and we just decided to leave.

Nice little restaurant in the old town, just off Niederdorf. Good location. Very cosy inside, and a lively crowd. Food was good and reasonably priced (for Zürich). Sort of in-between a $$ and a $$$. NIce wine list. Staff was very pleasant and helpful.

We came across this restaurant whilst wandering the side streets in the old town. The food was excellent, the service fantastic and by Swiss standards was relatively good value for money. Definitely worth checking out.

Bauern Schanke restaurant on Rindermarkt 24 is located in the old town. It is small restaurant (<50 people) with a very good selection of swiss dishes and a small wine list. The service is excellent and if desired, they have English menus. The prices are reasonable for Zurich (20-30 Swiss francs for most main dishes). It was bitterly cold the night I ate there with friends from Zurich (-20C). My friends raved about the quality of the place and they were right.

I had a wonderful pumpkin ginger soup that got my blood flowing again. I followed this up with wild boar tenderloin and spaetzle (fantastic). My dinner companions had veal bratwurst (excellent) and what would be a the more conventional schnitzel. Wine was 40-50 Swiss francs for a bottle and they had a good selection of French, Italian, Spanish and Swiss wines. Yes the Swiss make wine, as well as terrific beer. The white wines of Switzerland are very good, the reds are passable.

By now, you may be saying the prices are pretty high. Perhaps, but when in Zurich, these are reasonable prices. You can and will find many Zurich restaurants are even more expensive.
