Kafischnaps is definitely the place to stay if you like somewhere quirky and fun, with a happening bar and cafe downstairs... I stayed one night in the 'cherry blossom' room, which was very cute with its old iron door in the room (something to do with the previous life of the place as a butcher shop, I presume) and two lovely windows onto the street. One small single bed and a shared bathroom and toilet across the hall, all spotlessly clean and quietly stylish, in an understated retro kind of way...
It's a short stroll down the hill from the tram, four or five stops from Hauptbahnhof (the main train station), so its quick and easy to get around, to the old town and Niederdorf with all its fabulous cafes and bars...

There are some reviews on TP where guests are complaining about the music downstairs. I think this makes the charm of this hotel . I mean where else can you go where you can mingle with locals watch a concert in the evening and being one block from where everything happens? Plus in a city where the average hotel price might as well be a lot above 200 bugs I think one should not complain too much. But sure, if you would like to go to sleep at ten o'clock it might not be the best choise. Otherwise this is definitely a place worth checking out.

It was real excitement to stay at this small hotel which is combined to a stylish restaurant / bar in Zuerich 4. They had nice food and some good drinks while hosting a small concert. Rooms (maybe four or five) are retro in style but very cosy. Some feature a balcony, but bathrooms on the floor. Kitchen available.
Beside all other hotels in Zuerich which are mostly very neutral this one made fun.

The Kafischnaps was not awful, it was OK. Its main problem was that it hadn't made its mind up if it was a bar or a pension.

You book in through the bar and are taken up to the first floor to your room. There's only one bathroom and a separate toilet for a possible nine guests, so all of the opening doors and running to get showered can make it feel a bit like one of those scenes in Scooby Doo where everyone's running in and out of doors in the corridor. And you may have to wait for that shower.

The rooms are nicely decorated - some of them have a lot of character, are clean, and the beds are comfortable. But the rooms aren't made up every day (not for the four nights we were there). Now I'm not so bothered whether someone makes my bed for me every day, but I would like fresh towels once in a while, and either someone to empty the bin every day or a bigger bin!

Yes the cafe is smoky, but this is true of many places in Zurich - it's a very smoky city. The noise from the bar can be loud in the evenings, until about 1am, though after a day's walking/ sightseeing around Zurich, sleeping was not a problem for me. If you are a light sleeper, or like having a quite room, I would bear that in mind. And don't stay in the Zwätschgge (Damson) room - it's right above a bus stop and next to the toilet! The cafe was quiter at the weekend - you hardly heard anything - music or anything else - from downstairs on Saturday and Sunday nights.

My main gripe with the place was breakfast. When I booked, breakfast was included in the price. However, they apparently changed their policy on 1January 2009. This didn't stop the guy who checked us in telling us the breakfast was free, or the 'hotel rules' printed in the room saying breakfast was included. We had to argue for the first two mornings that we had been told on numerous occasions that breakfast was part of the deal (and it was only bread, butter, croissant, jam and a hot drink for goodness sake) and after that we couldn't be bothered and went elsewhere.

As I said before this is a bar that rents out very nice rooms, but it really needs to dedicate more time and care its guests if it really wants to be a good hostel/ hotel/ pension.

I had planned to stay three nights at the Kafischnaps (and I had to pay for that), but I left after the first night because it was virtually impossible for me to stay any longer: My room was directly above the bar/café which turned out to play music as loud as a club, with aggressive beats and until half past twelve (not 24:00 as announced before). The problem is that they start cleaning and moving the furniture at six o´clock, and chairs with metal things under the legs on stone make an awful noise!
The noise was only the worst thing, but on top of that I was rather disappointed because of certain "small things":
The lights in my room didn´t work, and only one of the three small lights near the bed worked so that it was rather difficult to get dressed in the morning without opening the jalousie; which was on the other hand not possible because all the windows were facing a big crossing. And there were no curtains which would have been nice with these big windows facing the crossing but nearly no light in the room.
The bathroom was not clean.
The switches in the corridor were very difficult to find in the dark since they had no illumination and were situated at odd places. Therefore there was a lot of noise during the night when people were trying to find the toilet or the bathroom.
The café/bar was so full of cigarette smoke that I couldn´t really enjoy my breakfast; the smell didn´t leave my clothes and my hair that day which is allright if you go out at night but rather unpleasant to start a day with.

We arrived in Zurich in the midst of a heat wave of about 90 degrees, so we were disappointed that Kafischnaps, a pension in Zurich, did not have air conditioning. However, we checked in during the morning and were able to shower (shared but immaculately clean bathrooms). The room was sparse but adequate. They didn't change the bed (duvet and bottom sheet only) every day or the towels. The staff was very cordial but nice. This pension is above a very popular cafe/bar, which is very convenient for a drink or breakfast, but annoying during a late night soccer game (the Eurocup was occurring) and when the staff played music and did dishes (lots of clanging). The breakfast was included and consisted of coffee with cream, large croissant, and french bread served with butter and jam. Lots of carbs, but with the price of food at Zurich restaurants, we ate it up to stay full. It's a good place to stay, right on the bus and about two blocks from the main tram to downtown Zurich. Fortunately at least public transportation is inexpensive in Zurich! We left the pension around 6 am to catch an early train after a 4 day stay, and the power was off in all of the bathrooms--we never figured out why we had to shower in the dark! All in all a good place to stay, certainly a step above a hostel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
KAFISCHNAPS is a coffee bar situated in the heart of Zurich, between the districts of Wipkingen and Unterstrass. It is a young, typically "Zurich" location - a blend of good old-fashioned "Beiz" tradition* and modern, sophisticated lifestyle. Hipsters share a table with fundies, kids get their Babccino and even your mom would feel at home in our little place. In addition to the eatery, the Kafischnaps houses a small private hotel with five superbly furnished rooms, which is ideal for tourists who want to experience life in Zurich at close quarters. * Beiz is the Swiss German word for pub or inn ... more   less
