“For a quick snack it is ok”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

It is located at Helvetiaplatz, where the 1st May manifestations usually start, where you periodically find nice markets of food and nonfood and where there are lots of places of interest in the "left-wing" areas of Zurich.
The athmosphere inside is great, large hall high ceilings, and an absolutely luxurious and clean restroom. However, it is just valuable for a quick snack, the menue card suggests sloppiness and the choice is limited. I had the omelette with spinach, but the cheese was quite creamy and strong, covering a bit the spinach taste

Mind you, I give 3 stars, but this still means that I will visit the restaurant Volkshaus again, simply because it still the best alternative in a surrounding of at least 1km.

“Best meatballs ever!”
Reviewed January 28, 2012

We had a very good meal and I would consider good value compare to the rest of Zurich restaurants. A much nicer more relaxed atmosphere. The meatballs were the house specialty and was excellent. My risotto was very tasty too service howeevr was somewhat slow as they didn't have many staff. Love the tartan wallpaper to the washrooms.

“Big - Quick and YUMMY”
Reviewed December 2, 2011

The restaurant, which for Zurich dimensions is rather big, seating still reflects the socialist roots of the Volkshaus which used to be and still is the meeting and administrative seat of the Swiss worker movement, but it is also a center of culture as it holds several meeting halls which are used for concerts, talks and theatrical performances.

Whereas in the old times the Restaurant was mainly used for quick and cheap approvisionment for socialist and union activists, standard fare she traditional workers dishes like Bratwurst and Rösti, today the Restaurant has acquired sophistication and quality - freshness is one of their badges of food quality. Dishes from the workers tradition can still be had however the quality of the preparation of food puts the simplest dish as fit for Queens and Kings.

The Volkshaus tends to be quite crowded and needs some patience with the service, they are not slow but refuse themselves to be hassled by impatient guests however they are not unpolite and sometimes tend to be quite funny and quick witted. Patrons at the Bars tend to be regulars going there since years. You left there yesteryear you come back much later and still can join in a similar conversation you started with the same patrons yesteryear. Guests are quite hospitable and usually don't object even to engage the foreign guest in their midst.

To get their you take a leisurely walk from the main station - ask for Hlvetiaplatz or take Tram 8 or Bus 32 to the Helvetiaplatz.

“Very delicious, but expensive”
Reviewed October 23, 2011

The food at this restaurant was very delicious, well prepared and presented, with a little twist on traditional recipes. I had some deer sausages with various accompaniements, and found them very, very good. The atmosphere was excellent as well, the tables were well spaced out, with cozy barriers between them, so you really felt like you had your own space rather than having to listen to the conversations of the table nearby. The furnishings were really great too, the tables and chairs were quite cozy old-fashioned affairs, but the lighting and walls were quite modern, which really created a very nice atmosphere. The only thing I can say is that it was quite expensive. Prices for a main meal ranged from 23-35 mainly, but went as high as 59CHF in October 2011.
