As part of a day tour - the chocolate train was an interesting 45 minute ride through the very scenic area. Enjoyed a cup of coffee and croissant. Jumped on a bus after arriving to Gruyere and then on to the Cailler chocolate factory.
Overall, enjoyable for our family of four (two adults and two children -12 and 7) - I'd recommend

This day tour was great- well organised and interesting. The tour included several hours free time in the delightful village of Gruyères. A fabulous castle, old town walls and some great cafes and shops. The chocolate tour at Maison Cailler was clever and contained a lot of info about the history of chocolate and the Cailler factory itself. Tasty samples at the end.
A day tour from Montreux that I would highly recommend.

Leaves every morning at 8:44am from track five Montreux train station. Get tickets ahead of time. Nice 45 minute scenic train ride in Belle Epoque cars, then you get on a bus and go to the Gruyere cheese factory. Learn how they make cheese, then they drop you off at Gruyere where you can have lunch and shop. Then you go to the chocolate factory and learn how they make chocolate. As many samples as you want at the end of the tour. The chocolate is fantastic!
Then an hour bus ride home to Montreux.
If you have a free day in Montreux you really should do this.

This trip is advertised as a Chocolate Train, but in fact you only spent the first 40 minutes on it, and the rest of the excursion was by bus.
We boarded the very old fashioned train in Montreux and it started climbing up the mountain behind. We were given a drink and chocolate croissant, and after 40 minutes were transferred to a double decker bus!!! We were then taken to the Gruyere Cheese factory, given a handset to listen to a commentary about cheese making. Had about an hour there then taken up to Gruyere old town and castle. Very pretty place and the castle was very interesting to look around. Had at least a couple of hours there, and then back on the coach to the Chocolate factory. Very good introduction to the process of chocolate making and a few tasters, then back on the coach to Montreux. How this trip can be called “The Chocolate Train” I really don’t know. Very misleading.

Lovely trip that started in a beautifully restored train coach

Was a little confusing whilst boarding as the platform was not mentioned and the train number on the ticket was not correlating to the displays.. few anxious moments locating the platform.. but at the platform you do see the signage and a temporary post with a service personnel who then helped guide us

The train journeys as as usual stunning but lasted on 45 mins of the entire trip .. the balance of the 6 hours was all on a bus which was also well appointed.. the trip to the cheese factory , the village and the chocolate factory all were well organised .. helpful staff and clockwork timing all was really really good

Overall .. I would recommend it for a comfortable day trip with kids.. but would massively temper down my expectations from the Chocolate Train expectations as the time is so short that you almost feel a bit duped..
