“My favourite place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2006

I have been visiting the chateau about once a year for about 25 years. It is hands down the best castle experience in Europe. The main reason for this is because it is properly castly! There is a spooky dungeon where you can pretend to be chained up (and see grafitti by Byron), rooms with huge fireplaces and armour and lots and lots of towers with scary stairs. Marvellous. Plus, it's on the water and in the summer, you should bring your swimming costume and head down to the little beach to the right of the castle. There you can swim around the chateau and look across to the French alps and feel extremely smug that everyone else in the world in not doing what you are doing. The little shop just outside the castle is also full of excellent knickknacks. How I love it all!
It's true that it can be very busy, but it's big enough to take the strain.
Go (with your swimming stuff in the summer) and have a lovely time!

“Impressive Chateau”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2006

A huge and impressive structure set right on the water with the best view of the castle from out on the lake. The self guided tour was thorough taking in a number of medieval rooms including a crypt, prison and a large hall with an armoury collection. The views from many of the rooms looked directly out to the lake and the mountains beyond.
The setting was pleasing if you ignored the nearby railway line and motorway. However if you wanted a more peaceful and authentic castle to explore then Chateau Gruyeres (40km north of Montreux) is a far better option than Chillon.

“Step Back In Time - Let Your Immagination Fly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2005

We recently visited Chateau Chillon during a beautiful sunny August day. Chateau Chillon is located just 4 km outside the main area of Montreux as you head towards the village of Villeneuve, just 2 km away from the castle along the lakeside of Lac Leman.

Although I had lived in Montreux for 1.5 years, I never actually visited the inside of this large castle. I decided to finally go check it out for myself as a tourist on our recent return to Switzerland because of the reviews and comments made by others in the trip advisor forum.

Getting there- Access to Chillon is virtually possible by every means of transportation. If you decide to come by car, take motorway A9, exiting either at Villeneuve or Montreux. The is free parking along the road in front of the castle, quite simply too hard to miss.

By train - The main rail connection is via Montreux is just 4 km from the castle. However, the regional trains go to Veytaux-Chillon which is just 300 meters from the castle. Just ask at the train station ticket desk for more help.

By boat - Regular departures occur during the main tourist months (approx April to Late September) from: Lausanne, Vevey, Montreux and Villeneuve.
The quay "Chillon" is only 100 meters from the castle presenting a wonderful view as you arrive.

By public bus - Simply take Bus No 1 from Vevey, Montreux or Villeneuve, which winds along the road next to the water. The bus stop is "Chillon" in front of the castle. Bus service is extremely convenient and every 10 to 20 minutes.

By foot - Walking from Montreux will take 4 km and about 45 minutes, or from Villeneuve at about 2 km or 20 minutes along the lakeside footpath. It's highly recommend if you have the time to enjoy such breathtaking beauty to walk to the location.

Costs - Self guided tours for adults cost 10CHF, and children 6 to 16 for 5CHF. Family rates exist as well as group guided tours which will give you a bit more of a discount if you have over 20 people. If you have a Swiss Museum pass, your entry is free. This is definitely the best buy for your money as I believe you only need to visit 3 museums to pay for it's cost.

Opening Hours - Hours are generally from 9am until 6pm during April to September and are a bit more scaled back during the low season months.

You'll be happy to know tours are available in 20 languages. You are given a self guided pamphlet to understand each area of the chateau you visit. There are approximately 35 different areas to check out on your tour.

Who should visit - Kids from ages 6 to adults will enjoy the visit the most. I think younger kids will not appreciate the history and all of the rooms you travel into, but that is only my opinion. There is much to offer for your money as you traverse along the Chillon grounds. Be sure to conserve your energy as the tour takes about an hour at a steady pace.

History - Chateau Chillon has a lot of history spanning back more than 900 years. The oldest part dates back to the first millennium. Once arriving at the castle, you can marvel at the stunning mountain views which surround the lake. Walk past the cobble stones and into the Chillon courtyard where flowers adorn the castle walls.

Walk inside the castle to experience history as you weave in and our of rooms full of lakeside views of Lac Leman. You will be able to view the basement and dungeon areas from below, as well as many different rooms and levels far above the main courtyard.

Architecture - The castle was build in sections of a large rock, during different time periods, and consists of 25 building units. During the 13th century, the Chillon castle under went many changes. Roman and early gothic architecture is characteristic of this time.

Today, the castle has been carefully restored. Special attention is given to the prison where Bonivard was chained to the 4th pillar between the time of 1530 to 1536. His destiny inspired Lord Byron to write the famous poem "The Prisoner of Chillon".

Collections - In the upper rooms of the castle, a rich collection of antique history in the form of pewter objects, weapons, chests, furniture and armor are on display for viewing.

Be sure to check out a part of history which will be here for many more years to come as you flash back into a part of history the people of the 12th to 16th centuries once lived.

My overall impression was better than I was thought to believe. Chillon has so much history and so much beauty for everyone to explore. It's definitely something for people to check out if you are in the Montreux area.

When leaving, there is also an area for souvenirs, ice cream and snacks and an area where you can buy your own Chillon wine. Now plan your trip and go visit an unique part of the history just outside of Montreux and Lac Leman.

“Chillon Castle - Best Place on Earth”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2004

Been to Chillion Castle. Among the dozens of places I've been to, and even comparing it to other Swiss attractions, Chillon is the BEST place I've been to.

As a man-made structure, it is awesome to think that it is a fortresss fgacing Italy and a Castle facing France & Switzerland.

As a natural environment, the views are unbeatable, be it from the castle towers, or from a ferry, etc.

Just the most incredible sight I've ever, ever seen in my many years of travels.

“A truly majestic spot -- a traveller's dream!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2003

The Chateau de Chillon is one of the most enchanting places I've ever been to! I'm not sure how drastically the environment there changes from season to season, but I went in July and it was fantastic! Not only is it amazing to think you're walking through a castle that could possibly be 1000 years old, but the beauty of everything is absolutely breathtaking!! From inside the castle, every window offers another lovely view-- whether it's one of the flower-filled courtyards, a view of the snowy mountains, or (my favorite) Lake Geneva!! Plus, you get to go on a guided tour, walking through ancient rooms and even the dungeon upon which Lord Byron based his poem "The Prisoner of Chillon." (One can even see where he etched his name into a stone pillar!) If you are going to this area of Europe, you HAVE to (I repeat, HAVE to) go to this incredible castle! Please! You'll be glad you did! It's been a year since I went there and I still think about it and how gorgeous it is. I'd go back today if I could! Go there!
