“Good but not worth 5 stars”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

I spent 2 days at the Royal Plaza Montreux Hotel I was in room 422, a double standard room with a view on the lake.
This hotel is more likely to be a good 3 stars or a 4 stars rather than a 5 stars : maybe Swiss hotel classification is different from other european countries?

The positive points of the hotel :

- A very good location : on the lake's banks, the view on the lake and the mountains is fantastic (if you have a room with a view on the lake). The hotel is also 5/10 min walk from the train station and right next door to Montreux's convention centre.

- The staff at the reception was extremely friendly and helpful, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask them(train timetable, info on the region, places to go, to eat, ...)

- The room was very clean which is highly appreciated.

- The room is fitted with a large bed which is very comfortable, a good A/C / heating system and a balcony, bathrobes slippers, safe box, ...

- The swimming pool and the Jacuzzi : this space was probably recently renovated as, it looks nice however it is quite cold but hopefully you have the jacuzzi to warm you up

The negative points of the hotel :

- This hotel is getting old and really needs a renovation scheme. the furniture and decoration is out of date, carpet in the corridors and in the room needs to ne changed

- There was always a noise of running water in the room (toilets' leak or heating system's default?) and you can hear the noise everytime the room next door or above use the electric shutters

- The bathroom is too small

- Stains on the walls in the room, paints is cracking at some parts of the walls and is peeling off in the ceiling of the bathroom : this is not the standard you would expect from a 5 stars hotels

- The fitness centre / the spa are too small, there are just a few fitness machines which are not modern and the staff is not welcoming

Room Tip: Take a view on the lake

My family and I went to the Hotel Royal Plaza Montreux for one night on 1st January. Here the positive things:
1. We loved the food, breakfast and brunch were great
2. The room was nice ( a bit old) and big enough, amazing view of the lake (we stayed in a Suite)
Here the things we liked less
1. We arrived at 13:hrs for check-in, we were told to wait until for check-in time. At check-in time (3pm) we were requested to wait until the room is cleaned. Unfortunately our children were tired, so we requested another room, which was given to us
2. My wife booked a massage at 20:hrs. The spa center in the hotel called her and asked her to change her booking, which she refused (we were leaving the next day). At 20hrs, my wife showed up at the spa and she was requested again to change her booking.
3. The swimming pool is old and a bit cool, not so recommended for small children
4. We expected to have a water bolier in the room (Junior suite), we had to request a thermos with hot water to prepare the milk for our smaller child
5. room is spacious but old, the balcony needs refurbishing

Room Tip: Rooms with a view to the lake highly recommended

We were upgraded from a room we had booked across the road at the Villa Toscane (a connected property) and enjoyed our stay very much. Perfect location right on Lake Geneva; the restaurant door opens on the pedestrian promenade. Very good service, nice room and very clean. The furnishings are a bit older but in very good shape. Decent sized pool with small Jacuzzi as well as saunas and steam baths (separate for men and women). Excellent American breakfast. We will come again. Parking garage was CHF 25.-, okay for Montreux standards.

Stayed here for one night. Location is great (right next to the lake and a short walk to the shops and restaurants) but the hotel itself is tired and dated. I can't possibly imagine how they can call themselves a five star property. My room was clean (I was apparently upgraded to a lake view as I requested a quiet room) but it was anything but quiet. There was a constant hum/clang from the radiators throughout the night. Beds were comfortable but, in typical European fashion, the "king" was two twin beds pushed together - and they kept moving apart when I rolled over. Staff at the desk were very polite and friendly and the bathroom, which appeared to have been newly renovated, was gorgeous - too bad they haven't gotten around to updating the rest.

On arrival at the hotel which is only a short distance from the station we were greeted with the words you also like to hear. " we have upgraded you to a suite". The hotel is well situated with fabulous views across the lake. The bedroom was large and very comfortable with a large bathroom, robes and slippers provided. We booked half board and the restaurant was of an excellent swiss standard. The treatments in the spa were expensive but excellent. The only down side of the stay was when we arrived at 9.30 on a Saturday to find that the breakfast had stopped being replenished. It is only a short walk into the centre of Montreux along the promenade at the back of the hotel.

Room Tip: Lake view room makes your stay special

Really disappointing for a 5 star hotel. the rooms are old, the spa is small, and worst of all, a terrible service. At the reception, everyone was really impolite, and no value for money. 300 chf for a night, when if you add 60 francs more you can go in a REAL 5 star hotel. They need to renovate the hotel and their employees.
