The Vivarium is a non-profit that works to save and maintain exotic reptiles, often those found abandoned or smuggled. They have a really good collection of LIVE lizards, snakes and other zoological wonders and the place is run entirley by volunteers and on donations. Don't be put off by the pot-holey access road, and the front door that gives the impression that they are closed - they're not! They stay open 365/365...and once you are inside, you are in for a treat...beautiful creatures! You can watch some being fed also. A great visit for kids, obviously, but adults will find it just as fascinating. Your visit helps to keep this place running.

I've been here about 5 times by now. I've gone most often with my children and have used this as part of a day in the Sauvabelin area. The Vivarium is active in community education programs (they often take a tent at various events such as Animalia ).

First off. This isn't particularly a tourist attraction. This isn't San Diego zoo, it's a smallish local vivarium that is great as a children's activity for the local community (and perhaps those from a few surrounding areas).

Location: While the vivarium is nicely located near Sauvabelin, this area is once again not very tourist friendly versus being family orientated. While there are a few things in the area for tourists, there's not much.

Animals: There is a nice little selection of animals here. They try to do a nice job with display, but I don't find it overly special. My kids enjoy it here (especially the Crocodiles and giant tortoises).

Our four year old daughters loved the vivarium and the variety of animals. There were a lot of displays on the ground and you could borrow stools to see into the higher displays so it was easy for the girls to see the animals. We also got to see the tortoises having their lunch which was a highlight.

However, my husband and I were quite shocked with the number of displays which had cracked glass and had been shoddily repaired. A concern when they contained venomous and dangerous animals such as black mambas! The access road was also very poorly maintained with lots of potholes. So despite the enjoyment our daughters got from the vivarium, I think it is unlikely we will return or at least, not until the display cases are replaced.

The vivarium has a lot of interesting species including "domestic" iguana which is very reactive and curious about all visitors and dangerous turtle which was found in a pond in Renens. These two became the celebrities of the vivarium, and we also spend about half an hour watching them.
You have a lot of information about each animal (of course only in French) and some temporary "guests". We saw for example crocodiles. What is more, the vivarium is situated in really nice place near Sauvabelin forest and tower. Really nice way to spend Sunday with your family or friends!
