Hinterdorfstrasse is 'Old Town' Zermatt. It's right in the center of Zermatt and some of the log cabin type housing dates back to the 16th century. No one lives there now and there are no services right there, but one can stroll down the narrow cobblestone streets and imagine how life must have been. The houses are supported on timbers and the weight is distributed by wide flat stones, so there a crawl space under some of the homes. Some of this space is used for firewood, other areas have a space large enough for storage, or even animals that once might have wintered there.
I came away thankful for central heating and indoor plumbing.

This was such a cute street of historic homes and architecture right in downtown Zermatt! I can’t imagine how they were still standing under all the feet of snow, but that is a testament to how well they were built!

Zermatt used to be a small rural village until very recently and Hinterdorfstrasse has some of the old buildings that make Zermatt so interesting.

Hinterdorfstrasse is between the Barnhofstrasse, which is the main shopping street, of modern Zermatt and the river. It is not long but it does have a lot of historic and interesting buildings showing us what Zermatt was like before skiing and climbing took over.

It is near the interesting cemetery, the museum and the church as well as many of the major hotels and restaurants

Interesting traditional little old backstreet. Various grain stores, drying rooms, houses from past times, right off the main street and only a 2 minute detour so worth doing.

The houses on this street bring you back to how things used to be, with stones at the base of the homes to keep mice out, Stone roofs and wood piled up underneath and some ancient craftsmanship. For fans of This Old House, Norm and the crew would have a field day here, but it is just a great way to think about how life used to be in Zermatt. Must see if in Zermatt.
