Owner description: The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

Just a fun ride and beautiful spot to take in when in Zermatt. Great gift shops and pasteries in the cafeteria. Look for the mountain goats on the cliff sides.

This really is a must visit location. The train to the summit has wonderful picturesque views, try and spot the waterfalls, stunning. It really gives you a perspective on the true size of the natural features. At the top the glaciers are on all sides with if you are lucky a view of the Materhorn. The restaurant serves very good food with self serve buffet an option too. One word of caution though the air at the summit is thin and you do get a bit breathless at first, anyone with breathing difficulties should bear this in mind.

We took the train to the top and hiked down, mostly in the Mark Twain trail the views of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, the glaciers, and the rest of the mountains are incredible. The walk down was fine, assuming you knees can take it. There are a number of good trails once you get away from the large crowds near the various stations.

The train to Gornergrat was top priority for our trip to Zermatt and it didn't disappoint. From the time the train left the station, great views of the Matterhorn appeared. Sit on right hand side going up for best views. Get a window where the top section can be opened to avoid photographs through glass windows. We went up at 3pm and had the choice of seats as it was not crowded at all. Views from the top were amazing. Check the live webcam before you buy your ticket. We didn't pre book in case of bad weather. Highly recommended.
