Owner description: The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

“Cloudy in Zermatt, bright sunshine at Matterhorn”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The cog railway ascent was wonderful even though parts were shrouded in clouds. When we reached the summit, the view was outstanding and the Matterhorn was visible in all her glory. The view with the mountain soaring over the cloud cover was beautiful. Don't miss out on this excursion even if it is cloudy and overcast in Zermatt.

“Gornergrat: An Afternoon Walk from Riffelalp to Winkelmatten”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

One day we bought a one way ticket for the Gornergrat train from Zermatt to Riffelalp. It's located at about 2200m and contains a large resort. The way from the station to the resort is not far, but a nice red trolley does its way back and forth to bring visitors at the utmost comfort. The Riffelalp resort is a nice and colored place. After being there for a while, we took the path that goes down back to Zermatt via Winkelmatten. The way is not difficult, it winds inside a wood with a lot of flora. One or two sections turned out to be more steep but we managed. At mid way we found a tee house which also serves light meals. We had a tee and an Apfelshtrudel - the popular apple cake you find everywhere. The path enables nice views of the snowy mountains, which added interest to the trail. It took us about 3 hours - including the rest in the tee house. very reassuring walk, very much recommended.

“Amongst the best views in Alps”
Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

This is a must if you like stunning glacier views. We walked all the way up from Zermatt which took 4 & half hours, it is a big walk but well doable if you are reasonably fit. There are options to jump on the train at a number of stages on the way up, or you can get the train all the way up and have a wonder at the top. Either way it is well worth a visit. There is a restaurant and a cafe in the visitor centre. You need to check the weather forecast as always.

“Great Matterhorn Experience !”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

We just took the helicopter ride but we still took the Gornergrat Bahn another popular attraction in Zermatt to see the Matterhorn. The station is right opposite the main railway station. It takes just over half an hour to reach the top. You can watch the video cam in the ticket hall about the actual visibility in Gornergrat so you can decide if you want to go up or not. From Zermatt it stops at 4 different stations before Gornergrat . Return ticket Zermatt to Gornergrat is 82 Swiss Franc each children from 6-16 yrs old pay half or if you have a swiss -pass / card you get 50 % off too.if you just want to go to the other stations and not all the way up to Gornergrat there is a price difference in fare price. You'll be given an information guide with your ticket. i think if you leave after 1:36 PM you pay less around 66SFand they also have a late afternoon ticket from 3:36 leave Gornergrat at 6:57 PM and you'll pay around 49 Swiss Franc Each station has a big board where everyone can see what the weather is like as you reach the top.The route is a hiker's & biker's paradise with views of 29 four -thousand-metre high mountains. We went straight to KulmHotel at 3100 ft above sea level , where they have a self- restaurant and a nice shop . It also has a separate small chapel outside the hotel. The view is amazing, stunning in fact and again we were very lucky because the weather is so clear , hot and sunny that day .You can see the majestic Matterhorn. It is very busy with tourist and locals too but the whole place is spacious you don't feel crowded. It's very inspiring to see people young and old, couples with young children walking and just relaxing. The train ride is very smooth through the forested mountain with a beautiful waterfalls . You can see the neat and beautiful chalets and gardens of the elegant town of Zermatt down the valley. It is definitely worth the trip, though not sure if the weather is not good visibility wise. But if money is not a problem, just go and hang out in the hotel and have a nice meal and a bottle of champagne, life is too short, enjoy and have fun!
