Owner description: The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

“A very worthwhile trip”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

If you are intending to see the Matterhorn from here, you need to really get up there early. As the clouds starts to settle during 9-10am, and you will miss the peak of the Matterhorn. Best time to arrive is probably 7-8 am, as you get to trek to the top of Gornergrat (not too tough) and get a good view of the surroundings. The only thing to dislike about this place is probably the food selection. Pretty limited to only one restaurant up here, so do come only after your breakfast.

“Great trip on the cogwheel railway and walks”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

With views of the Matterhorn and down the valley, and great walks this is a must. We enjoyed the walks as they were for the energetic, and had different views at every corner. This is a fun and enjoyable day trip from Zermatt, well worth the expense.

“Definitely need to do this trip”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Best thing we did in Zermatt. The views of The Matterhorn are spectacular and you also can see Castor, Pollox and a couple of other mountains, 5 glaciers in all. We were lucky and had a clear day so not sure what the views would be if it was overcast, not much I would think. The train itself is an experience!!

“Stunning Scenery Train Ride”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

Not the quickest ascent up the mountain to go skiing but undoubtably one of the most pleasant. The scenery is fantastic and the slopes from the Gornergrat are some of my favourites. MUST DO the evening trip up in the dark. Dont miss the last train back down though :o) Full Moon when we did this - amazing!

“Go in the afternoon to save money”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

This was without doubt one of the most enjoyable, stunning and memorable train journeys we've ever done. As our hotel was next door and bleeding money from us profusely, we spotted that you can do this trip at 3pm and make a considerable saving. The only thing we weren't sure about was whether the weather would hold up, but thankfully it did.

We couldn't see the Matterhorn at all during our time, but the views from the top are breathtaking. The staff were equally lovely in the summit hotel. We had some beers before leaving, which I don't think were too bad for the money. You can get a free Wifi signal at the top, but no mobile phone coverage! We had to wait a bit for the train to go back down as it was late leaving and the driver seemed in no particular hurry, which was strange for a country that prides itself on punctuality. I think it was the only train journey we did in Switzerland that was late departing!

I loved our time up the mountain and will remember it always. Especially the little church where I lit some candles for my Mum. It's just incredibly breathtaking up there and this railway is a real engineering feat.
