Owner description: The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

“Great trip up the mountain”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Be sure to get off the train as you either go up or down to enjoy more views of the mountain. If possible, sit on the right side of the train on the way up.

“Great views”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Without any discount (ex.: half fare card, childrens card) it is very expensive, but the view is worth it. Of course it is very touristic, with restaurants, gift-shops and a lot of people.

We took the train to the gornergrat and walk all the way down to Zermatt. Long but fantastic and diversified hike: rocking area, "range-land", forest, river, views - all you would like to see on a hike. After one hour all the hop-on-hop-off tourists are not anymore on the hikes and - to my surprise - we were allone hiking. Fantastic.

The problem: You walk from 3000 meter over sealevel to 1500 meter over sealevel. May be your knees will not enjoy it :-).

“Wow”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Just try it and it's really ''wow". The views are just breathtaking! However might be cold up there, which is not a problem, there is a hotel with shops and restaurant, so you can run in any time you need!

“Amazing views of the Matterhorn.”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

This was so good. I have problems with heights but this trip did not bother me as the Gondolas did later. The trip had several stops so you could get out anywhere and hike to your hearts content. The area has tourist shopping, snacks and up at the top, there is a great restaurant which provided full meals with a great view outside on the deck. The views of the Matterhorn were amazing although the clouds did spoil it a little. There was a nice artist at the top who was selling his wares, could tell you a lot about the area and was so friendly!! Spoke great English. The altitude was hard for my husband to handle and we had to sit a bit for him to get back to normal, but yes drinking fluids help tremendously. Drink water on your way up the hill. Not a full trip without this adventure!

“Go in summer for the views of the 4000m peaks”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

The view is fabulous - below is the Gorner Glacier and beyond is the Monta Rosa peaks, and then away from them is the Matterhorn in splendid isolation.

The walk along the ridge behind the station and hotel is good, not strenuous but takes you further along towards Stockhorn, but watch for patches of snow in places, even in summer. Boots and a walking pole are going to be helpful if you want to cross some of the snow patches.

The train ride up and down is a bit expensive without one of the Swiss rail passes that give a discount. Lots of people ride up walk all or part way down - but having done it once I can say it's a long walk all the back to Zermatt from the top.
