Owner description: The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

While staying in Vevey/Montreux, we decided to go to Zermatt and from there to Gornergrat Bahn which is almost 3 hours away from Lake Geneva area. As expected, Swiss trains were punctual and comfortable. We reached Zermatt around 11:00am and then headed for Gornergrat. One piece of advice: If you are taking train to Zermatt make sure to let the train officer knows that you are also planning to go to Gornergrat. This way you will be given coupons which would qualify you for a discount on the train ticket to Gornergrat plus a free cap and a free photo with Saint Bernard on the top. There is a good restaurant right at 3,089m and of course a beautiful view of Matterhorn and several other tips and glaciers. Make sure to take some sort of warm clothes with you. After returning to Zermatt, you really need to walk through this beautiful place and have a coffee or beer before returning back. What an experience !

Amazing views of not only the Matterhorn, but also stunning glaciers! They advertise the "shopping center" at the top, but there are only a handful of stores and very little to do at the top. There are limited hikes departing from there, but the view is great, and the hotel self-serve restaurant has nice, rather inexpensive, warm meals and drinks. The views are gorgeous, from the top and along the train ride, but make sure to go on a clear day!

If you are in Zermatt for only a short time this train journey should be top of your list. The railway journey is so scenic ( We went on a good day for visibility) Although we did not go right to the top, stopping at the Riffelberg, we had a wonderful walk away from the crowds before making our leisurely way down via the Riffelalp and then through the forest back to Zermatt. Our stop at the Huette just below the Riffelalp was restful, with no crowds, and the Roesti was very good. A bonus for us was an outdoor wedding at the Riffelalp with two people playing the Alpenhorn, one of them making a good stab at the wedding march! If you plan to walk down take poles as otherwise you feel it in the knees by the bottom.

On the face of it this appears to be an expensive excursion ( and it is!) but pick your day and plan to spend some time at the top and you will feel that you have had great value for money. Just take your time and soak up the views and atmoshere, it is an ever changing view as clouds come and go etc. The facilities are very good at the top and the restaurant has a great selection of foods and drinks. The train is very smooth and try to get a seat on the right hand side going up and the same on the descent.

If you only have one day to see the Matterhorn this is your destination! On the way back down get off the train at Rotenboden for some great photos of the Matterhorn and its reflection in the glacier pool. You can then walk to the Riffelalp station and pick back up the train. It's an easy 20 minute walk.
