Owner description: The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

Worth doing for a great view. Must go on a clear day or else you won't see much. Yep, expensive. You do get a discount if you have a eurailpass.

If you are in Zermatt, you MUST take a trip up to the Gornegrat!Make sure you pick a clear day (live shots are available at the train station prior to getting your ticket on the GornegratBahn!) Stunning at the top!! Enjoy a hot chocolate at the restaurant and let the views wow you!!!

We planned to hike all the way up to the Gornergrat observation area, but the weather wasn't cooperating when we were there. So we bought the train ticket and hiked up to where the trail appeared to be closed (it wasn't, we later found out) and then just hopped on the train to go the rest of the way up. There would be great views from the top if the weather cooperates. There are gift shops and restaurants at the top. Everything is pricey, but on par with the rest of Switzerland. We had the Swiss rail pass, which allowed us to get 50% off the train ticket.

An different experience for those who have not been on a cog railway before. Love it, and off course a good view from the top.

I was planning on taking the train up on a Monday but I woke up to the first snowfall of the season. The next day I took the railway up and with all of the fresh snow the views were spectacular! You can see all of the major peaks in the area and there are some great photo ops.

I stupidly left my purse on the train and the guy at the station was not exactly pleasant about it, but when I got back down to the Zermatt station they did have it waiting for me!

There is also a shopping mall at the top where you can buy souvenirs, and not just the cheap stuff.

Thank Ashley G
