The hotel Bijou is a typical basic Swiss mountain hotel that looks a bit dated with the fixtures and fittings but everything works perfectly which is all that matters when you want a clean bed for the night and good shower.
I have stayed in several hotels in Zermatt before and what I liked most about the Bijou was the owner, Andre. Swiss hoteliers are often just functional and it is quite unusual to come across one where the owner/staff are more approachable and engaging. He was helpful with tips on where to go and was conversational. He speaks excellent English.
We had a room facing the Matterhorn and what a wonderful surprise to open the curtains in the morning and see the view.

It is a bit of a climb up to the hotel so if you have a lot of luggage then you may want to grab a taxi which costs around 25CHF.

The hotel doesn't do meals (except breakfast) so if you are looking for something a bit out of the main street I must recommend the Hotel Cervo for lunch or dinner. We went one day and were surprised to find ourselves eating next to the same people that we had eaten breakfast with in the hotel. It is a bit out of the town centre so call ahead and book. In fact for dinner you need to do a bit of planning as so many places get booked out!

Excellent service from staff: an 'upgrade' to a larger apartment by management due to our needs (at no extra charge), a truly INCREDIBLE view of the Matterhorn, excellent breakfast with a range of options available with the dining room having an impressive Matterhorn view, huge spa bath, outstanding value for money, clean rooms, daily serviced rooms which we didn't expect for the price we paid, helpful and friendly advice with obvious knowledge of the local area. All 4 of our group would highly recommend Hotel Bijou to anyone wanting a relaxing, cheerful place to stay in Zermatt. Thank you for making our trip so memorable.

We traveled to the Matterhorn on a weekend whim from Geneva, and booked this hotel through this site. Although it was still the off-season, there were rooms available and they were great. Part of the hotel was not yet open for the season, and we needed room enough for a couple and a third adult, so instead of the apartment space that we booked online, the owner gave us two adjoining rooms at the same price. It worked out wonderfully, as we had plenty of space and privacy. The balcony of one of the rooms overlooked the Matterhorn itself, in all its splendor. The breakfast was tasty, and staff was pleasant, and the owner/manager was well-versed in English and very helpful. He even gave us a free ride down to the train station upon our departure. We will hopefully get back to the Bijou again.

This hotel had friendly staff, and a beautiful view of the Matterhorn. The hotel is well priced considering Zermatt hotels can be extremely expensive. The rooms are big, the hotel embodies the Swiss style, and it's not too close to the village so there are very few people around. There is quite a steep hill to get to the hotel, but these are The Alps after all. Breakfast is generous, and I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

If you have ever seen the movie Heidi and fell in love with the alps atmosphere then you'll be right at home here. The sounds of cow bells off in the distance and the view of the Matterhorn really make this the perfect place to stay. The staff is so very friendly and speak so many different languages everyone can feel at home. Our room was a nice size..our first experience with a double bed (really twins pushed together) so it was funny to wake up in a crack but we made do. Bathroom was a nice size with a tub! The town is just so what I expected. We only had one night but would definitely return.
