Took the train up to Sunnegga and decided to hike down!! Train only takes 6 mins and is around CHF32 for two adults! It is the obvious choice if you are only in Zermatt for a short while and there is also the option to take the train back down which will cost more. Whilst the hotel suggested two hours at a slow pace, it took us a lot longer though we did stop for lunch along the way!! (We are not experienced hikers) Lunch was in a basic place with outdoor patio offering minestrone soup and beer!! At nearly 50CHF it wasn't cheap but food was good. Such a beautiful walk if you are fit and able but make sure you have proper hiking shoes!! Trail is well signposted and orange tassels around trees help keep you in track!! There are a few different options of trail depending on your capabilities. Views are spectacular and you can get many great shots of the Matterhorn! There are several summer seats on the walk down if you fancy a rest!!

If you have limited time in Zermatt, and wish to make a cable car ascent, this is the place to get views of the Matterhorn. There is a cafe, and a mini-gondola takes you to a pond and play area for children.

about a 10-minute walk from old town Zermatt along the river and one can board the Sunnegga funicular and then cable cars to the top. The 5-lake trail is worth taking although we wish the signage of the trails could be better.

Took the funicular and cable car up to do the 5 lakes trek.
The train is fine (it would help if people moved to the top to board). You are in a tunnel all the way up so don't have any views until you get out at the top.
The tickets cost 39chf per person for the train and the 1st cable car from Sunnegga, you then do the trek and take the return train from Sunnegga back to Zermatt.
If you want the best views of the Matterhorn it is generally best to get up there before lunch as it is common for cloud to gather on top of the Matterhorn in the afternoons.
The is a small swimming lake and playground at Sunnegga so could be good for those no walkers and those with kids.

This is the common starting location for the famous 5-lake hike. It is easily accessible via a train from zermatt to Blauherd and then a cable way to sunnega. Even if you don't want to hike to much, there are spectacular views
