The hotel has a van which comes to the train station to drive you to the Hotel. It is up on a hill among 135 other hotels in the neighborhood. The room was lovely and relatively large for Switzerland. Breakfast and dinner were included in the room rate and the dining room was elegant with a nice choice of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Food wasexcellent. Breakfasts included fresh made omlettes, fresh squeezed orange juice and wonderful coffee. It is a pleasant walk to the center of town which looks like one would imagine a Swiss town should look like Zermatt is beautiful.

We were looking for a hotel that was a bit away from the hustle-bustle of Zermatt, and picked Romantik Julen as it seemed somewhat away from the town. However, its not!! Its about a 2-3 minute walk from the main street, though in a part of town that is certainly much more quiet. And i must say we were lucky to have booked this hotel as it would have been really tiring to have trudged up all the way (to the ones that are on the outskirts) after a day's hike in the hills. Its about a 10 minute walk from the ski lift for Matterhorn slopes. Morever, its very convenient when you have to step put for a meal - all the restaurants are close by.

Coming to the hotel - its lovely. A small caveat though - we paid a bit more to be in a room that opens up into the matterhorn view and it was a large room, quite spacious by European standards. The small little balcony was simply perfect for a cup of coffee or to sit and read or simply to stare a the matterhorn. The room was lovely, lots of cupboard space, big comfy chairs, elegant lighting and thick curtains. The room color (start pink) was perhaps not the most pleasant on the eye but maybe its been painted that way to bring some life on dreary winter days (we were there in summer in June). The bathroom has everything that you look for, not too big and not too small. The hotel has a unique charm to it - a great mix between the old and the new. Some bits are very, very modern (like the swimming pool, spa etc) and there are parts that clearly are from a different era. The service was fantastic - our safe was rejecting the password and i asked the front desk for help. i had barely kept the phone down and there was a knock on the door!! Small gestures like a chocolate on the bedside each evening or assitance in getting to the station (or even in finding the hotel!!) went a long way in making our entire holiday in Zermatt memorable.

Two things that clearly stood out at this hotel (for me) - the swimming pool and the breakfast. The latter is an amazing spread of delicious food. Everything that you would expect at a top-notch hotel (frankly, i was expecting far less and maybe thats why i was bowled over). From fresh food to hot food to eggs to order to different kinds of muesli to multiple breads to wine...................a crazy array of food. The owner's daughter, who is on the front desk sometimes, told me that they get people from all over the world and cant figure out what they would like for breakfast - so they decided to have something for everyone! thats a lovely thing to do and evident when you sit down for the morning meal.

the swimming pool is fantastic - indoor and in the lower floors (basement). Funky lights, eclectic music and periodic fountains make this an amazing place to swim. i had never experienced something like this in my life before. just the perfect way to relax. Very, very clean and comfortable. Do take your trunks if you are staying here. I did not use the spa though it looked very inviting from the outside.

the hotel is more on the expensive side but i would come back here with my eyes closed. The staff, location, views, breakfast (!!), pool (!!), the room.....a great combination.

Room Tip: While you need to pay more for a room with a matterhorn view (highly recommended), the rooms that do...

Spent three very nice nights at Hotel Julen. It was a pleasure to come back to such a nice place after hiking all day. The view of the Matterhorn from my balcony was like a postcard and I could have sat on the balcony all day. Rooms are very clean and beds are very comfortable. The pool and spa facilities were amazing and saunas very nice. If you want excellent Swiss food -- especially lamb, there is no need to venture outside the hotel and the hotel restaurant serves excellent lamb and traditional Swiss food. Breakfast in the morning is great. Nice little bakery across the street and a small grocery store next to the bakery so you can load up before starting out on a day of hiking. Hotel is centrally located so walking to most anything is 10 minutes. Sophie -- general manager -- front desk -- is awesome. She is incredibly helpful and knows your name every time you go in and out of the hotel. She must speak 3 - 4 languages fluently and her English is excellent. She is one of those people you meet who will be a friend for life. The Julen family runs other properties in Zermatt and on the mountain and all the other places I went too were excellent and the same high quality -- like the Stafel restaurant (on the hike down from Schwarzsee) on the mountain which her brother runs. I can assure you that the next time I am in Zermatt, I will stay at Hotel Julen.

This hotel is in a strategic position inside Zermatt; you can get all the bus to Matterhorn and Sunnegga depurteres as far as walk directly downtown. Rooms are cosy and well structured also if not very large but everything you can need is over. Indoor swimming pool, fitness facilities and spa are ok, very clean. Breafast is extremely cared, with a lot of choice. Don't miss a dinner at the Stube were you can have an excellent lamb carpaccio and others specialties in a typical valaisanne environment very well cared.

We love the Hotel Julen! All the elegant touches to be found in a cozy Romatik Hotel...down comforters, beamed ceilings, bathtub with the best soaps, magnifying mirror, balcony overlooking Mont Cervin (Matterhorn). The location is ideal - quiet yet close to walking to village. Breakfasts are the best - Muesli, freshly squeezed orange juice...

Great 3 day experience at the hotel.
Their restaurant is also very good.
I was quite impressed with their fitness facility and the indoor swimming pool. It was most unexpected. The lights are motion activated so it appeared to be closed.

Upon inserting your room key the place magically lights up and you will be surprised. Their spa facility beat every 5 star hotel's fitness center we encountered during our trip.
The rooms are beautifully appointed, clean , new and comfortable. The internet works well.
The staff are there to assist you in all your needs.
ONLY CAVEAT: There is construction going on next door. Starting at 7:00am we were disturbed
by the noise. The hotel has provided earplugs in every room. Make sure you ask management when the construction will be completed before you book your rooms.

I had a really nice time at Romantik Julien. The property's decor and rooms are cute, yet very modern. The rooms and all amenities were super clean. Although we did not pay a premium at all, our room was a nice size, with two balconies, one of which provided a full view of the Matterhorn. The breakfast was fantastic. It included a good variety of chesses, fruits, meats and the usual, hot and cold. Dinners at the restaurant downstairs were good too .The staff was super nice, especially Sofia the girl at the front desk. I have to mention the spa experience although a little funny as it was unisex and no swimwear allowed, It was very relaxing and one of the bests I have seen with a few different temperatured steam rooms and saunas. I highly recommend especially to couples. I can't wait to go back again this year. :)
