Reviewed April 3, 2013

We stayed 1 night during a road trip across Italy and Switzerland.

Good:

- Quirky and interesting throughout. The in room guide talked about bringing New York to Zermatt and they have succeeded - it reminded me exactly of a hotel in Manhatten.
- Lovely bed and room
- Great bar, service, experience.
- nice to have a ski room and locker for my kit - an extra I was not expecting.
- Spa treatments and outside jacuzzi just what is required - if a little Bohemian for my limited tastes!

issues:

- None - and I don't often write that!

Everything about this hotel shouts creativity. One gets the impression that it has expanded from the design studio nextdoor, taking in the underground bar and cinema on the way.

Entry via the lift to reception on the second floor sets the scene for your stay. The hotel only has 6 cube lofts (we stayed in one of these) on the 2nd floor and 10 standard rooms on the 3rd floor. Since they pick you up from the railway station, they know who you are, and check in is more a case of having a drink and a chat.

First impression of the loft rooms is that they are great fun, with the bed upstairs, on top of the bathroom and wardrobes. So the whole thing forms a big cube in the middle of the room! And it all works really well; it is an easy place to be and do what you need to do.

Even if you do not stay in this hotel you must:
1) Consider a super posh dinner at After Seven, reviewed separately, and probably the best gourmet experience in Zermatt
2) Take in a film in the underground cinema (with or without dinner), nothing like any cinema you will ever have been to before!

There are some caveats:
- Not really idea for families: no conventional restaurant, no room service, no pool
- Housekeeping, as mentioned in other reviews, is not the hotel's strongest point
- Nor is guest communication, e.g., on the last night we were given what looked like a voucher for a free drink at the bar, nice. However, the barman knew nothing about this and further discussion revealed that it was only valid for a party starting late that night.

There are lots of conventional luxury hotels in Zermatt, most are very "safe" and unexciting, Backstage is a breath of fresh air.

Room Tip: The cube lofts are great and really what this hotel is all about.

Dear Andy, thank you so much for your lovely and honest feedback. Yes, our picturesque hotel specialises on couples who want to enjoy a romantic trip to a beautiful mountain village such as Zermatt. However, we do offer two family cube lofts for a family of four. Our fine-dining restaurant managed by Ivo Adam - very special gourmet experience - opens again in December for the winter season. We agree, the cinema is an unique experience and we assure it will be remembered forever. Sunny greetings from the mountains, the Backstage Team

We recently had a week at the Backstage Hotel, staying in a Cube Loft room and enjoyed the experience, although when you set yourselves apart as something unique, people will judge you accordingly, expecting something extra special.

The hotel and rooms are a designer's haven, both unique and engaging. The list of design features is long and clever and by and large does not get in the way of function. Our cube loft had a king size bed and 2 singles - perfect for our family of 3 and very cleverly designed in this respect to fit so much into the given space. However, somewhat strangely though for a ski resort hotel, it had limited hanging/drying area/hooks for our ski clothes - which for 3 of us were significant. We had them lying over anything we could. The ski room downstairs, although excellent only had room for the 2 of us and did not accommodate easily the extra set of boots, skis, helmet and poles. More to fit in our room as a result.

Housekeeping though was hit and miss -mini bar not always filled up, Nespresso pods not restocked etc. Greater consistency here would make a huge difference to the overall experience. The front desk and restaurant staff though were friendly, warm and helpful when needed. Breakfasts too, were a perfect start to the day.

We loved the design, the location and the experience, it is truly one of a kind, but the hotel needs to tighten up a few loose ends to be truly great.

Thank you so much for your great feedback. We do appreciate your opinion and are always grateful for critique - whether positive or negative. Your feedback helps us to improve and as we are a young hotel with high aims, every suggestion and idea for improvement is very much appreciated. We are aware of the limited space in the ski room, however, we will try and find a solution for the coming winter seasons. Sunny greetings from the mountains, the Backstage Team

Edgy design with brilliant location Staff can't do enough for you. One Cube room and separate double for our family really worked well. Gorgeous breakfast room overlooking ice hockey rink to wrap around mountain vista . Spa concept unique and a treat for the senses after a day skiing. Very relaxing caring environment . We will be back!

Spent 5 days in Zermatt skiing for new years. Hotel was a last minute find for a busy week, so I probably paid more than you normally would. Had no idea what o expect but ended up loving the place. It's different, so it may take a day or two o get used to it. Upon arrival, before I could even check in, they offered me a free drink of my choice nd told me to sit and relax! That's a first and a very nice touch. The lobby/ dining room is amazing...floor to ceiling glass with a view of the mountains and hockey rink across the way. The chandelier was supposedly designed by the owner and it's incredible to stare at in the foreground. I stayed in one of the Rooms (as opposed to the cubes). Balcony is super comfortable with a great view...but I was on the side of hotel, which is less than perfect for the view. Shower was nice and hot with good pressure, separate toolbox for toilet and yet a further separate space in the bedroom for the sink (I found this a bit annoying, but got used to it). Gas fireplace a nice touch on the eyes and makes it feel more like a ski hotel than a trendy boutique. Good closet space, but a lack of shelves to put clothes and no drawers. Though nice touch, you can put all your luggage under the bed. The ski room is awesome...tons of space for all your gear and a secret exit to the street that saves you time and distance getting to the main street. Must take advantage of the spa...cool concept of a bunch of diff rooms tied o creation of the earth...outdoor hut tub, sauna, steam room, plunge pool, etc. very cool experience. The vernissage club downstairs is also awesome. Bar, movie theater and concert venue. Key tip....ESP on a night with a big event on...lbo need to pay for tix or wait on line...you get in free and easy as a hotel guest. Got to see an awesome concert as part of the zermatt unplugged series. Very cool bar scene as well. Breakfast was good....amazing service and waitstaff .... Eggs cooked to order, any kind of coffee, hot chocolate and decent continental breakfast fare with meats and cheese as well. Location is absolutely great...two seconds from the main drag....5 mins walk to the lift, or 3 mins to the ski bus to go to the other lifts. Staff in general were great. One of the most unique places I've ever stayed....not for ski traditionalists, but great for anyone with a sense of adventure or looking for something cool and new

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the street to get an even better view, though may potentially be noisier

We spent 4 days in Zermatt and our stay was perfect. The weather was great the town is amazing and the Backstage is incredible! A one of a kind hotel experience! My cousin and his wife joined my wife and I on our Swiss adventure in Zermatt. We really didn't know what to expect and were blown away by what a great experience we had. Everyone at the Backstage were great, I recommend this hotel without reservation, it was fantastic!

On a 9-day trip to Europe this was my favorite of all hotels! It is a lovely boutique hotel with a very cool design. Hotel is new, rooms are beautiful, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Met the owner/designer and that was a nice bonus, and all of the staff were exceptionally kind. The hotel offers a wonderful breakfast and has a bar and cinema downstairs. The hotel is well located and in easy walking distance to the train station, restaurants, and shops. Stay here and you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Matterhorn.
