if you want to be in the good old times then go to this place. Horse cariage and all this stuff out of the 19th century tourism in the Alps. A large dining room with chandeliers would have been more appreciated without the tourists in jogging cloth offending someone's eyes, but that is how the 21rst century meets la Belle Epoque.

Room Tip: ask for the Matterhorn view as everywhere in Zermatt!!!

My husband and I went to Zermatt in 2011 and stayed at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. We were up-graded to a suite, with a view of the Matterhorn and the lawn and street in front of the hotel. Our room was beautiful - even the closet (which had a window) was stunning. The staff was friendly and attentive, the dining room so exquisite, and sitting at a table on the lawn watching passers-by, we felt special. The carriage that picked us up at the train station was a wonderful added touch. The concierge spent time with me on the computer to identify a huge insect I took a picture of buzzing the geraniums on the deck: a hummingbird hawkmoth. Incredible! Now we compare every hotel to the Zermatterhof and wonder how to justify another trip to Zermatt so we can stay there again.

Hotel is a bit old, but is well-maintained. Rooms are small (but I believe, that for Zermatt its a standard), but very clean. We received a complimentary bottle of wine & fruits basket upon arrival - which was a nice touch. Service is good, staff is helpfull & polite.
We did not like the breakfast in the hotel at all, last few days we did not even have it. The choice of food is very limited, it's the same from day to day and it's not up to a level of a 5-star hotel.
The lifts are bit far away from the hotel, but you can always take a electric taxi (Zermatt is a car-free area) for around 10CHF or walk arpund 10mins by foot. There is no free shuttle service from the hotel.
Spa is always very busy, it's hard to book an appointment. The treatments overall are good, but to be honest it's nothing special. Don't go for manicure or pedicure - these treatments are of really poor quality. There is also a pool & saunas, that you can use free of charge.

To summarize, I would say that for Zermatt this hotel is good, but in Austria you would get much more value for your money Vs Switzerland (in terms of hotel & service & food & ski passes). Just to compare, last year we went to Austria's one of the poshest resorts - Kitzbuhel and stayed at the Grand Tirolia hotel 5*, which was twice less expensive, but the rooms & spa & service & the hotel itself were much-much better. We also payed 3 times less for the ski pass there :-)
But of course in terms of skiing itself Zermatt is much better. So you have to decide what is more important for you.

First time at this hotel and we loved it. The staff were really friendly, the restaurant Prato Borni was excellent. Many of the dishes are prepared tableside with care and some flair. Good fun. Quite expensive though so be prepared for that. Nice Spa and pool. Plenty of good food at breakfast, but egg station can be slow.

Salt and Pepper shakers were basic but classic.

Room Tip: Get a suite.
