“Great views, old school charm, let down by poor service”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

Booked a 2 nite package in a Villa Junior Suite (with lake view), which includes a use of a Maserati for a day. I've previously stayed here 5 years ago & was blown away by the view, so thought I'd come back with my wife this time. What a disappointment.

In isolation, room was fairly good (with free wifi) except for a few things that spoiled it. If we didn't experience the restaurant & the other services described below, the overall rating will be a little better.

Room- plenty of old school charm, clean & modern. However, upon entry, the room stank of smoke. Pillows & blankets stank too. We requested a change but were told all rooms in the hotel were smoking rooms (I just checked the description prior to writing this review- it says it's possible to request non smoking rooms. Someone is lying somewhere!). Balcony faces the lake, but water keeps dripping down from floor above, making half the balcony constantly wet. The double bed was actually 2 singles pushed together- even blankets were 2 single blankets. Not ideal, but we didn't make a fuss. Cheap toiletries for a hotel of this calibre.

Transport- we were picked up from the train station by the hotel but driver was 5 minutes late. Unacceptable, since hotel is only 10 minutes drive away. We were also sent to the station upon departure. The bell boy & driver took one of our bags each. They didn't bother to carry them down the short flight of stairs at the main entrance, but dragged our bags down. Seasoned travelers will know that this is very bad for luggage wheels.

Breakfast- breakfast room was simple & nice. Spread is quite limited but acceptable. Good strong coffee. However, service is disappointing. Plates weren't cleared promptly. Bear in mind that this is a small hotel and there are maybe 5-6 tables occupied. On our second day, I was given a coffee cup with a big coffee stain at the lip area, only to be replaced with another with a not so big, but still evident lipstick stain. Seriously, staff don't seem to care at all.

Bar- seems like plenty of wealthy people congregate here for drinks or dinner, as evidenced by the supercars we constantly see outside the hotel. Waiters were indifferent, bordering on arrogant. I requested for a drinks menu but was instead greeted by "Should I suggest something for you, sir?". If I asked for the menu, I want the menu. When we finished our drinks, we weren't asked if we'd like another and empty glasses weren't cleared.

Dinner- nice busy restaurant, food was fairly good (and pricey but I suppose if you want to dine there it wouldn't bother you). Good extensive wine list. Waiters very professional at their work, but again indifferent. We weren't made to feel welcome at all. Just another couple spending a few dollars at their premises.

Car- our package includes the use of a Maserati for a day. I specifically asked over the phone AND via email which model it was going to be, and was told both times that it will be a GranTurismo coupe. They ended up giving us a Quattroporte saloon. The receptionist on duty was very apologetic (Alicia I think- really she's the only pleasant employee we've met). She tried to get it replaced for us but the GranTurismo was already loaned out. The receptionist that confirmed the model (Karin) told us she didn't know what a GranTurismo was, and thought Maseratis are all the same. If you don't know the answer, get someone else who knows to reply the email! Now some of you may think I'm being unnecessary fussy, but I know my cars well. We brought the car up to the mountains & it's simply too huge for the windy and narrow mountain roads. And I'm paying for it, so I think I deserve to get what I booked. It's as good as booking a lake view room (and paying for it) and getting a room without a view. In the end, we got a slight discount amounting to around CHF100.

We departed Lugano for Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio. What a HUGE difference in service & overall experience. If you're going to Lugano just to experience this hotel & Lake Lugano views (as we did), forget it. Bellagio has better views over Lake Como, is just a short distance across the border from Lugano, and you will have a MUCH more pleasant experience in Villa Serbelloni.

We used to stay and watch the firework here every 1st of August when Switzerland celebrates its national day - the terrace has a spectacular view over the lake and mountain which has a "wow" effect when one enters the lobby area and embraced by the beautiful scenery. Then we had to stop coming because the hotel was closed for renovation. Last Autumn we held my husband's birthday party here and all of our guests (from overseas as well as within the country) were overwhelmed by the excellent service of the hotel staff as well as the perfect surroundings of the hotel. Organizing the party was a long and boring process but working with the hotel staff especially the front desk manager Stephanie was such a pleasant experience that the tedious organization seems to have turned into fun. She put all our guests on one floor to minimize distraction to other hotel guests. Several of our senior guests received special attention because they had problems with their ankles, knees or hips. The restaurant serves excellent Italian cuisine and has a beautiful lake view. When we did our tasting menu, the maitre D served us himself and took pain to explain the different wines to match with the dishes. At the party, the assistant maitre D was there to supervise everything and they made no mistake about who were vegetarians and who were allergic to diary products etc. We also had a brunch next day after they had cleared the breakfast area where everyone could enjoy the beautiful view before heading home as well as a nice relaxed meal with great food (other than the normal continental breakfast, we had sea bass baked in salt crust and roast beef which were delicious). Like everything else, there are also downsides of this hotel - it is very expensive, the breakfast is average, the spa is quite small and it is not in the center of town (hotel shuttle runs every half an hour). But people who come here should bear in mind that this is a place where they are coming to spoil themselves and not to save money.

Room Tip: Since you already decided to spend good money by coming, you might as well stay in the best rooms to...

We initially made a reservation through an online booking system, and somehow received their best lake view suite for the price of a non-view single. Realizing the situation and not wanting to travel so far and show up being told they would not honor it, I called ahead. They reviewed the reservation, realized the mistake and asked to call back. Several hours later, the manager called noting the mistake as well as our travel reservations. She very graciously and professionally said they would honor the reservation and pricing. And we were excited about getting one of Switzerland's best suite at a great price.

Service on arrival was equally professional. All the staff were very helpful throughout the stay. The suite was excellent with a great view of the lake, mountains and city. The restaurant and bar were very good (and equally pricey). At a fixed course dinner, they mixed up my entrée - and then deducted the price of the main dish for their mistake without my asking.

The other guests all appeared to be idle rich, as did Lugano. A couple of older guys in ripped jeans and ball caps could have been aging rockers (no one we recognized, but they didn't appear like they'd earned enough money to stay at this place while working in a bank).

None of our family wanted to leave the hotel - a great experience unlike other places we have stayed.

Room Tip: The Villa had better and more convenient rooms from what we could tell than the residence. Residenc...

We were there mid march and were truly disappointed. Te reservation already was not simple, because we found a much lower price on hotels.com and claimed a price match on the "lower price guaranteed" hotel website, and that was not simple. Later, we found a ever lower price, but didn't want to start the process again.

The hotel is in a remote part, without public transportation nearby, so be prepared to get a taxi. There is a hotel shuttle, but not on Sunday (why?) and… sometimes not on Monday neither.

The Spa closes early (and sometimes does not even open on monday). When, we arrived, we were "welcomed" by a woman who has to do her job, and didn't seem to enjoy it very much, and that was quite unpleasant.

The hotel seemed nearly empty, but we got a room beside a family with a very young and noisy child, and we knew it (particularly in the bathroom).

Our room, in the villa, was nice but with no real view. Some parts of the bathroom are surprisingly of poor plastic and some of them broken.

The breakfast was really excellent. At night, we got some expensive coffee and tea in the lounge (not specially good, just expensive).

Dear Guest,

First of all, please accept our sincerest apologies for not having met your expectations and thank you for having taken the time to fill a comment on Trip advisor. For us it is crucial to know what our guest think about the hotel and its services.
The shuttle to Lugano is not working on Sundays as all shops in town are closed. But if a guest wishes to go to the city center, and if our driver is available, we’re more than pleased to do the transfer on request. Thank you for pointing out the opening hours of our Spa, we will have a look into it. Also we will have a look at the equipment of our bathrooms.
We would like to thank you for your compliments about our breakfast and its area. With pleasure we will forward them to the team.

In the hope you will return to the Villa Principe Leopoldo in Lugano, we remain at your entire disposal on info@leopoldohotel.com for further information you might require or for questions you might have.

It was my first stay in this property. Hotel is situated on top of a hill about 10 mins drive from lake shore. The rooms at the back of the property overlook the lake below. We were in a junior suite which included a good sized terrace which offered a superb view of lake and mountains. Terrace enjoys complete privacy from other adjacent rooms. Suite was spacious and had all amenities. Included was breakfast which is served in a room which gives onto a lovely terrace, of course enjoying spectacular Swiss scenery. Staff is helpful. We needed to check out before breakfast time but were kindly given coffee tea and croissant in room before leaving. Hotel also has a private car park which may be full if hotel is hosting an event. In this case an underground car park is available for hotel guests.

Room Tip: Ask for lake view

If you want a retreat from Lugano, this is a lovely choice high on a hill. The small, 37-room hotel has beautiful, spacious modern rooms. We were only there briefly but I thought the restaurant was fantastic (varieties of risotto are a specialty and the service was incredible). The only drawback is that you will need to take a taxi to the shopping and the lake -- and at $25 each way, that can add up.

I was advised to stay in this Hotel by a friend when visiting Lugano. The ambience was stunning, the paintings on the walls were just to impressive, even the wash room doors were exotically painted, the service was impeccable room very well maintained and attention and care of guests just very very good.

Room Tip: Choose any room they are all spacious and real real Italian touch in hospitability
