thank you very much for having stayed with us and for taking the time in writing a comment here on Tripadvisor.
We are pleased that you have enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you again to our Hotel Federale on your next visit to Lugano.
With kindests regards
One of the few remaining family run hotels in Lugano and it has a very warm feel as all staff from reception, to the maids, and waiters were very friendly.
The room was of a good size, very clean, with very comfortable bed and high quality bed lined. Some of the furniture was borderline old/vintage but on the whole good and charming; although the armchair should be re-upholstered. The bathroom was brand new as it had recently been refurbished and very nice. The room had a nice large balcony with partial view of lake Lugano. No aircon in the room which mean the room was rather hot at night for sleeping as it was about 30C during the day. But I understand they are progressively installing it in the rooms.
The free wifi worked very well.
The gym/spa was a let down as the gym portion was very small and also used to store furniture which I believe is rather a health & safety hazard. Also there was no aircon which means it was very hot in the basement to use the treadmill or bike. The spa area with sauna was basically turned off so I assumed one had to prebook to use it, which is rather cumbersome. Might just be better to do away with the whole thing and not advertise it rather than disappointing customers who want to use it. Also there was no wifi connecting in the gym.
I stayed nearly a week and had halfboard, which meant I ate dinner every night at the hotel. The menu was varied and always delicious and the service excellent. I recommend it. And the old owners of the hotel came round every evening to greet the customers which I thought was a very nice touch.
Dear Mitch B,
thank you very much for having stayed with us and for your comments, which are very helpul.
Gym and sauna in summer: yes, it is messy, but in summertime it is hardly used and we use it, but as you point out we better should not, as a sort of storage room.
Starting March 2014 we will have a gentleman overlooking the area and offering massages, so the area will be more alive and well kept.
Thank you for the compliments regarding the restaurant and the friendliness of our staff, which are two point very important to us.
Thank you again for staying with us and having taken the time to write us, and we look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel on your next visit to Lugano.
We stayed in the family room on the first floor with the big balcony and really enjoyed our stay. As a family of five it was a terrific setup and we all fit very well. The large family room fits 3 and the connected room held the other two kids. Lugano is an expensive city and the hotel represented a good value. In an effort to save money we bought pizza from the restaurant at the train station and ate on the balcony. Great way to spend an evening. Air conditioning was a big bonus as it was extremely warm.
Dear Family rxrteam,
thank you very much for having stayed with us and for your time in writing a review.
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay in Lugano and we look forward to welcoming you back here some day.
The Hotel Federale is a nice hotel close to the city center. It had the feeling of a once very formal upscale hotel with high ceilings and a grand marble staircase. We visited in August so it was very warm and the rooms are not air conditioned. There was a fan which helped but it was still very warm. We had requested a room for 4 and we were really squeezed in to the room that already had too much furniture before the extra beds. We slept with the windows open due to the heat and the noise and fumes from the cars on the street were not appealing. The staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke english so this was very helpful. The parking was a bit difficult and pricey. The breakfast was good but nothing too spectacular.
thank you very much for having stayed with us in August 2013, which indeed was a very warm month this year. Regarding airconditioning, some rooms do already have it, and other will be fitted with this coming winter, during our slower season. Due to the fact that we are a very old building and in the old city, we have to do it slowly and finding each year architectonical solutions for almost every single room.
We thank you for your comments which helps us to improve continuosly and we hope we will be able show you a better hotel on your next visit to Lugano.
With kindests regards and thank you again for your visit and your comments.
Very clean, good staff, and great location. Our room with small balcony over-looking town was clean, comfortable, and up to date. Nice bathroom. A little cramped for the price. No AC; just a fan. Hot weather is not comfortable here. Hotel Wifi should be complementary, but is not. Breakfast was pleasant. Food is good, not great. If you want to be close to town and train station, and you cannot beat location. I'd stay here again, but not for more than a night or two, and primarily for the location. Room rate is a little high for what you get; but Switzerland is expensive no matter where you go.
Dear Ryan S,
Thank you very much for having taken the time to write a review about our hotel and thank you also for having stayed with us. Regarding your two main complains: AC is difficult to install in this old building and up to now we have in about 25% of guest rooms. Each winter, during the slow season we continue, but it will take a few more years to have all rooms with AC. Heating is more important in Lugano, and our main concern was there.
WiFi should have been free and I apologize if you had to pay. As of July of this year, we paid the last bill for the installation, and it became free.
I hope we can one day welcome you back to Lugano, and look forward to having you experience a better hotel.
With kindest regards and thank you again for having stayed with us.
We have made many visits to this family run hotel since 1990 and I'm pleased to say that it's as good as ever and in some respects better. It was good to see familiar faces and to be warmly welcomed as we checked in. Our usual room on the first floor (complete with balcony) was waiting and this had had a recent makeover, making it look very good. The management of the hotel has been transferred to the two sons but Mr & Mrs Galliker still look in every day and check with the guests at dinner that everything is alright, with second portions offered if requested. On this visit it was too breezy to sit on the terrace for dinner, but this has been a pleasure in the past.
Our bedroom had all we needed including the all important bath - again a makeover and sparkling clean. The breakfast buffet was as usual very large and tasty. No hot items here but the museli makes a visit worthwhile on its own. Everything else you would expect was there in quantity. Despite having an Asian coach party in, there was still plenty left afterwards.
All in all a very welcoming hotel, even to the car provided to take us up the hill to the station. We look forward to our next visit.
Dear Steve Gill,
Thank you very much for having stayed with us again and thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor.
