Great experience. Nice trip up with little train. Once on the top, you can see all canton of Ticino with mountain behind. Lovely place to enjoy the views or have a pick nick with friends. Worth a trip.

“Fantastic Day Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

Catch the local train from Lugano to Capolago and you find the station for Monte Generoso , with very helpful staff. The trip up is excellent and the views are great across into Italy. The walk up to the summit is well the effort. There several viewing points on the way up the stone steps to the summit and photo opportunities abound..Although not a perfectly clear day we were still able to spot Monte Rosa and the Jungfrau from the top. The is a small play area fro children as well as a picnic site. The terrace restaurant is great and gives you great value meals and snacks. A definite must on any trip to Lugano or :Locarno.

“Unexpected beauty”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

We basically went op the monte Generose by chance. We saw a sign beside the road pointing to it and followed the road up to where we were forced to stop. This road is not for the faint hearted (narrow, steep and along steep cliffs.... It is Switzerland so the road is in perfect shape). Parking at the end will cost you SFr 2.50 for 6 hours, enough for the general visitor.

We followed the signs for the Ferrovia train midstation at 1200m and discovered that we could go all the way up to the summit at 1740m. It sat us back SFr 56 for two adults, one child paid and one child for free (gesture of the barman selling the tickets). If we had taken the train from the valley we would have paid even more than SFr 120!!

The ride is big fun but can be freightening to those having troubles with heights and steep cliffs. Views are just more than spectacular. From the train you can see the hikers on the mountain, that would be our preferred method of ascending during our next visit; must be evenly spectacular.

The summit station offers various easy hiking trails up three summits. Again not for the faint hearted although trails are well maintained, wide and well fenced and secured.

Avoid catering in any of the stops along the train tracks and at the summit. These are outrageously expensive and of very poor quality. Bring your own lunch and drinks.

Monte Generoso is defintely worth a visit, just be smart and avoid any "attacks" on your wallet. You could limit your cost to the SFr 2,50 parking fee and then hike up (1,5 hrs) and down (45 mins) bringing your own foods.

Nice Sunday getaway.

“Monte Generoso from Lugano”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2013

Only one ferry from Lugano Central at 10.15 meets train at quayside at Capolago.
Train then goes to Capolago main station ( stopping trains to/from Lugano every 30min) where it gets busy then continues up the mountain.
Sit on the left if full. If not start on the right for the first part.
Restaurant and café.
Short walks from summit of different difficulty to three viewpoints and the Italian border.
Views excellent over the Alps and towards Milan.
Very enjoyable and well worth it.

“Fantastic day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

On a clear day the views from the peak of Monte Generoso over Lake Lugano, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore with the snow capped peaks of the Alps in the background are simply stunning. The summit was beautifully peaceful with wonderful views of lush green countryside and the sound of cow bells tinkling in the distance. One of the most memorable holiday moments.
The rack railway departs from the street outside CapoLago train station, you can see the rails in the road and there is a ticket office to purchase your ticket. The tickets are quite expensive but it is a unique experience and worth taking the train right to the summit where the best views are.
Take a picnic, a jumper and some comfortable sturdy shoes, the summit is about 15 minutes walk up a stepped stone path from the station, when you get to the top there are seats from where you can admire the view.
If you arrive at at Capolago station at lunchtime outside of high season there may be a gap between trains on the rack railway but you can pass the time by walking for about 4 minutues along the street into the village where you will come to a pretty public park at the head of Lake Lugano with beautiful views down the lake.
It is an easy day trip from Como where accommodation is cheaper than in Switzerland, the S10 suburban train runs every hour from Como St Giovanni railway station to Capolago station and the return fare is 10 euros.
