“Value holidays in a luxury resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2012

The Youth Hostel in St Moritz does not appear particularly convenient, but the bus route 9 that serves it is only a few minutes from the main railway station and both the cable car and the funicular railway up Corviglia. The hostel itself is more like a hotel than a hostel with a range of en-suite and shared rooms, bar, games room, kids room, TV room, boot room, ski room, free wifi and a lounge with a roaring wood fire. There is only one main course at dinner, but this is compensated by an excellent salad bar, and the breakfast menu is very good. Add to this the friendly service and convivial clientele, and the Youth Hostel adds up to an excellent value alternative to a cheap hotel. It is also stylishly modern and extremely clean.

As well as Corviglia, it is pretty easy to get to Corvatsch and Diovolezza, the other two ski areas in the Engadine, and there is good access to winter walks, cross-country etc. Apres ski is slower in bad than in Dorf, and the bus to the hostel doesn't run late, so this is probably not the best choice for wild party animals, but for families, groups, avid winter sports enthusiasts and people-watchers it is excellent.

Room Tip: The majority of rooms are 4 bed dormitories - if you want your family or party to have exclusive use...

Chose the youth hostel on cost wanted to do a cheap ski weekend, what a bargain, the hostel is clean modern, the reception, sitting area and TV room would not look out of place in a three star hotel. There are a variety of rooms from bunk bed rooms to doubles with on suite. The rate included half board, breakfast had a good selection from breads, yoghurt, cereal, fruit juice and coffee, the evening meal is a simple but good meal and three courses. The hostel has large lockers that you can store bag's in which is great for early arrival or late departure. Durning the ski season the No9 bus stops right outside the hostel and connects with the two main ski areas and the rail station. If you want to do the night skiing at Corvatsch its about a 15 minute walk to the bus stop, though you can get the 9 depending on the time. There's not much to do around the hostel so we grabbed a beer or wine an relaxed in the hostel.

The staff are great very helpful sorted out our lift pass, drew maps for us, nothing was too much trouble.

I do wish we had known that you could get towels from reception

Room Tip: if you don't like sharing with strangers ask for sole use.

Good value for money - one of the cheapest options in St. Moritz. Rooms spartan, receptionists difficult, breakfast bad - but this is a youth hostel and a cheapish one for that part of Switzerland. Keep your expectations low and you will be fine. A perfect base for hiking in the mountains. The alpine woods start literally at the hostel's backyard. Easy to reach from the train station by bus (a 5-minute walk from the bus stop). Can get very noisy (remember, it is a youth hostel), but the management will be on your side because they like peace and quiet too and don't tolerate partying. One thing to keep in mind - the reception is closed for most part of the day (check their website), so you should plan you arrival accordingly.

Renovated this year the hostel is one a wooden palace. I stayed here with a young family who were well catered for with a toy room in sight of the bar and a field out the back.

It's a bus ride to town but there is also a push chair friendly hike from the hostel through the woods to adjoining villages.

This hostel is basically perfect for a hostel.

The hostel was great, brand new, rooms are great and comfortable, the restaurant of the hostel, was very good, it made a good pasta, and good local fish!
breakfast was a bit poor but ok.

the atmosphere was a bit cold, it didn't feel really like a hostell, it felt much more like a hotel.

Staff was very frinedly and helpful.
Location is not the best but you can reach it easely from the train station walking along tha lake's path in 20 min. or taking the bus 9.

I'd anyhow suggest it!

Stayed here 31/7/10 for one night. Booked by Internet on Swiss hostels website. Paid CHF 49 in a dormitory, including breakfast and evening meal (only option available), plus CHF 1.50 tax, less CHF 3.45 refund due to construction work.

Located on the South side of the lake, ie the opposite side of the lake to the railway station. It is about a 30 minute walk along an easy lakeside path, or there is a bus from the station to the hostel (which I did not use).

I was in a 4 bed dormitory, with washbasin. It was spacious and light, probably the best hostel room I had on this trip. There are lockers, one for each person, which are operated by a refundable CHF 2 coin. Good showers, separate from the room.

There are several common areas, and a room for Internet, so even if busy you should be able to find a quiet spot if you want.

Breakfast available from 7.00. Standard buffet. Includes cereal, ham, cheese, juice, hot drinks. Generally a good breakfast.

Evening meal included in overnight rate, 3/4 courses, generally good.

There is no kitchen for self catering, as was the case in all the HI hostels I stayed at on this trip to Switzerland, which I found a drawback, and different from my last visit.

There has been major renovation throughout 2010 - virtually completely rebuilding the hostel. It is closed for most of this year, and was open briefly during the peak summer period which is when I was there. This is resulting in a modern hostel with good facilities, and an appealing feeling of airiness and light in it. It was very busy, including many groups of young people. Overall I liked it, based on this short visit.

In the ritzy town of St. Moritz, where even the unglamorous things have glamorous prices, the Youth Hostel is an affordable option to stay and participate in the skiing, nightlife and staring at the bizarre behavior of people with endless money.

The hostel is as traditional "youth hostel" as I've ever stayed at, with each room containing several bunk beds, all co-ed and with people you do not know. Communal toilettes and showers.

A large cafeteria serves up the most cost-effective spartan breakfast I have seen in a long time (and that's saying something considering the standard dusty muesli, fruit, yogurt and cold cuts of meat offer I find throughout Switzerland, Germany, Austria. Breakfast included orange juice so sour it made you THINK about how it's from concentrate, slices of white bread (which I spread with jam or nutella), dusty muesli cereal and weak coffee water.

The great thing about this place is that, when all is said and done, it is a reasonable walk to the popular hillside center of town (St. Moritz Dorf) from the hostel (St. Moritz Bad), probably about 15-20min. At night during winter, you can even get your thrills by walking across the frozen lake! (Follow the well worn trails across the snowy ice... near the stream, the lake is NOT frozen!) Well worth it. Easy enough to stumble home late from the nightclubs in the "dorf", or easy enough to stretch your legs after dropping your ski gear for the day at the hostel and heading into town in those comfy shoes for some drinking and dancing.

You won't feel clean. You won't feel rested. But you'll play the pauper as part of the crowd in St. Moritz.
