I booked this hotel as a surprise trip away for my husbands 40th birthday. After seeing a photo online of the sails above the spa lit up at night the hotel had stolen my heart.
We took the train across Switzerland from Zurich, which I can recommend, and the last hour of the journey takes you up through the mountains on the Rheatian Railway which is absolutely spectacular.
The hotel from the outside is not all that exciting, bar the beautiful spa with its colourful sail windows in the evening, but once inside it is very grand. We were given a guided tour of the hotel on arrival, after being picked up by the hotel concierge from the train station in Arosa. We were shown to our room and shown the spa area and where breakfast was served. The whole hotel is stunning, laid back, quiet, calm and cozy.
We had a Deluxe Queen size south facing room, which is more than ample for a long weekend away. The views of the mountains all day long were beautiful. The room is decadent. The bathroom is wonderful and the underfloor heating is a welcome treat after spending the day walking around in the snow. A selection of chocolates and treats were in the room on arrival. The balcony was nice to experience the bracing morning air (minus 14 odd whilst we were there) and the sun loungers were nice to sit on with a big blanket over us whilst looking at the view.
The spa is beyond amazing. The architecture is incredible; the granite walls are elegant, and the pool is stunning. We used the pool, sauna and steam rooms. Being a typical British couple we were a little surprised to find that most people removed their bathing attire when visiting the sauna area, but we left a towel on as this was more comfortable for us.
Breakfast was really nice - a very large selection, including Gluten free options for myself which were delicious. The restaurant area was very relaxed and we enjoyed spending time eating breakfast in no hurry.
Most of the guests were skiers, but we have never given this a go so we went to Arosa to enjoy the views and to make the most of the well maintained walking routes around the peaks. The Tschuggen express was really fun (although they have changed the cars now so they self level) and was handy for getting up to the Tschuggen area of the resort.
We stayed here on the opening weekend of the winter season. The Tschuggen Grand Hotel opens a week earlier than the rest of the resort, so we struggled for restaurants to visit when heading out into Arosa in the evening as there were not too many restaurants open (we did not visit the restaurants within the hotel, they were not all open this first opening weekend).
We visited the first weekend in December. Arosa had had a good amount of snow, which having read reviews is a bit out of the ordinary (it seems previous years the snow has come much later in the winter season) so this topped it all off for us. The resort is gorgeous all covered in snow.
Looking back on our photos (which I do fairly regularly) and it all feels like a bit of a fairytale. The whole weekend was just amazing, Arosa is a beautiful little town, and the Tschuggen Grand Hotel was absolutely spot on. We are not wealthy, we are not upper class, but this was a weekend of luxury that was totally worth it. I would love to return again in the future. Thank you for making our weekend one to remember.
