Our family recently took our very first European vacation. We splurged on top-rated hotels at each location, each chosen extremely carefully after a year's worth of planning.

We stayed at the Romantik Hotel Schoenegg for 2 nights in Wengen. The hotel was our absolute favorite! It was just wonderful---completely modernized rooms, yet with beautiful quaint style, inviting warmth, and great character. What a great position in Wengen---a beautiful setting in a storybook location---right at the end of the short main street and close to everything in town. The service was just wonderful! We loved the personable staff. The on-line pictures can't capture the quality in the rooms or the ambiance of the hotel. You have to go there to experience the character and warmth of this classy quaint hotel in an unbelievable location. Every time we walked through town, our hotel looked the most quaint and inviting as we approached it. The manager picked us up from the Wengen train station after we called him from Lauterbrunnen, informing him we'd arrive soon. What a fun short ride on the little cart through car-free Wengen!

The restaurant also had a home-like warmth to it with large windows and personal service, and the meals were unbelievably top-notch gourmet! The chef is to be commended and so is the hotel manager! The staff and manager were accomodating, personable, and friendly. Our family of four (we have two teen girls ages 15 and 18) will never forget our experience at this hotel. We were so taken by the overall feeling of the hotel and the quality of the meals.

After visiting London, Paris, Rome, and Wengen (at top hotels in each location including the five-star Waldorf Astoria in Rome), our only wish is to go back to the Romantik Hotel Schoenegg in Wengen. It's like a quaint yet modernized home away from home---a heavenly break from our hectic everyday lives!! I dream of going back there someday---to the best hotel in the best town!

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms for our family of four with beautiful mountain views and view of the main street. We had large window-like doors which opened to a large shared outdoor balcony, almost like a large porch or patio. The large balcony was nice to have to walk out at any time and look at the mountains. It looked as though any room would have spectacular views.

The Schoenegg is a wonderful old, small hotel in beautiful setting. The hotel is quite old, but has been expertly modernized without destroying the lovely old character. The staff is courteous and helpful. The rooms are lovely and ours had a great view of the mountains and town. Highly recommended for an overnite or week-long stay.

Room Tip: get a room with a view toward village center to get the best mountain views

After a change of ownership we were glad to find that all the excellent qualities of the Schonegg remained. Sensitively thought out modernisation means new decor, wonderful mattresses, on trend lighting, wi-fi and even a good range of TV channels (if wanted). The bedrooms and balconies have spectacular views of the Jungfrau, in the early morning and evening light the mountain peaks are tinted pink and gold, a sight to lift the heart in thankful appreciation of their beauty.

We had returned to the Schonegg with some concerns about how it would be now but our doubts were entirely unfounded. The resident manager, Philippe, has extensive experience in hotel management and a keen eye for providing quiet, professional yet friendly service. He leads a team of staff who work hard to make their guests' stay the best holiday experience.
Chef Hubert and his team create delicious meals using carefully chosen produce. For example have you ever had homemade beetroot risotto? We hadn't but it was tasty and appetisingly presented and very more-ish.The in- house fresh fruit sorbets were another highlight, indeed every meal was a fine dining experience. ( As a vegetarian the main courses were not appropriate for me but each night a tasty alternative was provided.)

For our stay the weather was rather cold, indeed we walked the Panorama path from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg in falling snow at te end of June; sections of the path still covered in the white stuff too. We saw some different mountain flowers this time, the early ones including crocus and bright anemones.

We bought and made good use of our Jungfrau railway passes and enjoyed trains, cable cars, buses and lake steamers for a variety of journeys. All to be thoroughly recommended!

If you are looking for a good base in the Bernese Oberland you will not find better than to stay at the Schonegg and will be glad that you made such a good decision.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a great view of the mountains.

Romantik Hotel Schoenegg is a lovely hotel in a fairly traditional style (wooden furniture) which still manages to be distinctive. It´s got a good location, with a beautiful view of Wengen and the Alps, the rooms are fairly large and very comfortable and the service is very good - personal without being intrusive.

The dinner at the hotel restaurant was truly excellent and very modern, worth the visit just on its own merit.

For travellers who´re picky about breakfast, it´s worth mentioning that breakfast at the hotel is continental style.

As far as I could tell all rooms had a balcony. In addition to the hotel restaurant, the hotel also had a kind of traditional library room, small and cosy, where you could sit down and unwind.
