“A bit basic accomodation, but great food”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

A very friendly hotel, with great staff, excellent breakfast, packed lunch, and a great dinner menu. The standard of the food was very good with a different menu every night. The rooms were a little "tired" but the beds were comfortable, although the bathroom/shower room was a little small. Prices, like the rest of Switzerland, were a bit on the high side, but we knew that before we went!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have views over the main Street. The back rooms, have in my opinion better views...

Five of us were booked in by Swiss Trails for a two night stay during our Via Alpina trek in July 2014. On arrival at 3:05 we were in need of a beer but were told the bar was closing - but we could take a beer up to the terrace. This terrace didn't have good views and was very unkempt. The rooms were tiny and dated and hard to get to with narrow stairs and no lift. Two of our group complained. Within minutes we were moved at no extra cost into the Residence part of the hotel where the rooms were much better equipped and we could even cook lunch. It's a pleasure to be in Wengen itself but if I were going back I'd look for a place to stay that was slightly less shabby. The Bernerhof is OK but couldn't award more than 3 stars

Room Tip: Tro to get transferred to the Residence!!

Overall: I stayed here during the June summer month; would have no problem staying here again. Pros: Clean, comfortable, good breakfast, the waiter/waitress at the restaurant (who also serves as front desk clerk) were very helpful, rooms affordable, some rooms have nice views.

Cons: You have to pay an 'arm and a leg' for Wi-Fi access; is this the year 2003 or a 5-star hotel (the only places I've seen charge for Internet). Several other guest at the morning breakfast were complaining that their connection was unstable/not working. Glad I didn't purchase the service.

Name tags/assigned seats for the morning breakfast; thought this was sort of funny. Is this a European thing? I didn't like my assigned seat location so I picked another table. The waitress didn't seem to care.

Good to know: No elevator/lift but that did not bother me (it may bother others).

Unfortunately, our room was on one of the top floors with no elevators in the hotel! We had a very difficult time climbing all the stairs with our bags. Would have definitely appreciated a porter service for our luggage at this hotel. Our room was also quite small, with an even smaller bathroom. Nice view, with friendly staff. Tables were assigned for breakfast. The breakfast was overall excellent, with cheese, eggs, bread, yogurt, muesli, and nutella. Coffee was quite a disappointment, however. Soap ran out during our stay because it was not refilled the night prior. The hotel has a very convenient location to Jungfrau and the train station is quite close by. We enjoyed taking the train to Interlaken as it was very scenic. A major negative is that the wifi was only free for 1 hour. I think they should at least provide 1 free hour of wifi per day of a guest’s stay, as the current system doesn’t encourage long reservations.

We stayed there for 10 days end of june 2014

First the good points
Location excellent ,very good view from the balcony at the front. The food was quite good on most nights the breakfast buffet was fine and the pizzeria which belonged to the hotel Served very good pizzas .

Now the bad,the rooms were very dated. The so called bathroom was inadequate and as has been commented before is the size of a cupboard and it is difficult to have enough space to use the toilet ,if the door is shut. The shower attachment was fitted too high up in the shower and was not adjustable. The washbasin is in the room and not in the bathroom
There was a strange smell on the groundfloor of the hotel which was a mixture of fondue and dogs. The hotel allowing pets. The staff tried quite hard but didnt always know what they were doing as they were sometimes responsible to cover the restaurant, reception and answer the phone at the same time, sometimes resulting in slow service.

However the biggest problem I encountered was that my bed collapsed on two occasions and the hotel staff only gave it a temporary repair where as in my opinion it should have long ago been replaced,

Room Tip: Check the bed is ok

A lovely little village on the train-line from Lauterbrunnen and onto Kleine Sheidegg and then up to Jungfraujoch. The single room is extremely small, but after reading reviews I was prepared for this and quite comfortable, and warm (during 3-4 degree nights). The village is lovely, with fantastic views, and a supermarket, bakery and some restaurants/bars. The breakfast was included in my room rate and was outstanding. Cereals, eggs, fresh bread from the bakery, cured meats & cheeses, yoghurt and fruit. The breakfast room gives you a wonderful start to the day with a view of the Jungfrau. Only downside is you have to pay for wi-fi. 5Eu for 24hrs. Very short walk from the train station.
