“A 50th Birthday to Remember”
Reviewed August 22, 2005

My husband, my parents and I stayed at the Belvedere Hotel in June 2005 to celebrate my 50th birthday. The weather was fantastic - much warmer than we expected high in the Alps. We booked the holiday as a package with Thomas Cook in the UK.
Our original room was on the first floor, at the back of the hotel next to the fire escape (we didn't pay the supplement for a South-facing room). Having quickly decided that this was a mistake, we paid the extra for the most amazing view of the Jungfrau. (It worked out cheaper to pay the supplement at the hotel than it would have done through the travel agent - about 70 Euros).
Our room looked as though it had been recently decorated; the bathroom was also new and very clean. The reception and lounge areas had a traditional feel to them - it was easy to imagine how it would have looked in Victorian times.
The waiter service in the restaurant was excellent, as was the food (that is, apart from the packed lunches, which consisted of a ham sandwich and an apple EVERY day!).
I can't wait to visit Wengen again, but I'm not sure I would stay at the Belvedere. However, it was reasonable for the price we paid.
The village of Wengen and its surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful - don't forget your camera! (Make sure you buy a Swiss Rail Pass - everybody travels by train - they are on time to the SECOND!)

We are a family of four with two children, ages 4 and 6. We stayed at the Belvedere for 11 nights on a package holiday with a well-known British tour operator. Our accommodation was specific for families and had a small twin bedded room adjoining the main bedroom and sharing a bathroom. This was good from the point of view that the children had there own space, however, the overall size was extremely limited and the main bedroom was significantly smaller than a 'standard' bedroom. Positively cramped in fact. The rooms were clean but the standard of decoration was poor with peeling wallpaper and cracked tiles in the bathroom and refurbishment is definitely overdue (I believe the first floor rooms may have been done). On the positive side, the views from the south facing balcony were stunning but take care with your kids as there were a couple of nails sticking out of the floorboards on our balcony..!!! Speaking of floorboards, this was the cause of one big problem for us - the noise! The family of 4 who were above us sounded like a heard of wildebeest when they were going about their nightly routine on those wooden floors. Service in the hotel was a little mixed. The restaurant staff were very friendly with the children and the attitude towards children on the whole was very relaxed (which was just as well with our two). Saw no sign of a Scottish restaurant manager though as mentioned in the other reviews, perhaps he was on holiday. Other aspects of the service could have been better, we had to ask for our drinks on a regular basis and various items of cutlery were missing from the table almost daily. The food was reasonable, for it's type, with a choice of three meals in the evening, one of which was vegetarian, but they do need to learn to go easy on the salt. The evening buffet also included quite a nice salad selection. The location of the hotel is good, being just on the outskirts of the town but only a short walk to the main street and rail station. To sum up, I would describe this hotel as being relaxed and child-friendly but with some rough edges, in serious need of a refurb and very noisy if you are unlucky enough to have wildebeests staying in adjoining rooms.

A quiet hotel with bags of old world charm just a few minutes walk from the main street. This Hotel is great for couples who want to have a nice meal and then retire to the lounge to finish the wine and have a quiet conversion or read a good book.
The food is very good for a 3 star hotel with a good breakfast buffet and three choices of main course (one vegetarian) in the evening. The restaurant is open at good time and Grant the Scottish restaurant manager and his staff are very helpful and polite. Evening meals can also be taken at the Hotel Silberhorn.
The bedrooms are basic but of a good size and clean and tidy. Pay the extra for a south facing room with a balcony the views are absolutely stunning.

Stayed during August for a summer break and fell in love with the town and the hotel. Built around the turn of the century, the Belvedere has a certain faded charm, like a rich old aunt who no longer attends the poshest dances of her past.
The location really suited us because it is very close to the high street but sufficiently removed to avoid the night time revelling. The hotel has great views to the east (toward Jungfrau) and South across the Lauterbrunnen valley toward Murren, etc. Our room was not large at all and was pretty basic in its facilities but the balcony was a great place to see the sun setting on Jungfrau.
The food will not win any awards but it is fine (with two main choices each night) and plentiful. The breakfast buffet is great and they will make you a picnic for each day if you ask.
We found the staff very helpful (I totally disagree with the person who mentioned the rude restaurant manager) and they really looked after us. There was usually coffee and cakes waiting in the bar when we returned each day.
A little bird tells me that it is also the official residence for the Swiss ski team during race week - and they wouldn't put up with crap, would they?

We have just returned from a beautiful sunny week in Wengen, staying at the Belvedere hotel which turned out to be just as friendly and charming as formerly reviewed by "wonderful views". The food was great for a halfboard menu and we have never, and most probably never will, have a more magnificient bathroom balcony view overlooking the Jungfrau!

The south facing views from the hotel have amazing moutain views and the rooms are clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful - except for the restaurant manager who was totally rude and arrogant. The evening meals in the restaurant are also a poor standard. For the price the hotel isn't bad although there are probably better alternatives in the area.

Great hotel with incredible views! Nice, clean rooms and a good bar to savor a good cognac after a day of beautiful wandering high in the Alps!
