This was my first visit to Wengen and the Alpenrose. Now that I'm home, I know that it was just the first of many visits to come. Wengen is an amazing base for outdoor activities, but I'm here to review Alpenrose.
We arrived at the Wengen train station in the early afternoon. We phoned the hotel from the hotel info kiosk, and they dispatched the porter to pick us up. He was there is less than 5 minutes with the electric van to carry us and our luggage to the hotel. On checking in, we were shown our room and the porter brought the luggage up promptly.
We had room 301 with a balcony and amazing north-facing view of the mountains. One night, I had the pleasure of watching as the mountains turned completely pink right before sunset. Then about 3/4 of an hour later, the nearly full moon rose over the mountains. Just breath-taking! The view from our room was well worth the extra dime we spent for it.
The room was on the small side by American standards. The bed was comfortable. The down pillows quite squishy. The decor was very nice and on the traditional side, lots of wood. The bath had all you needed plus a huge vanity cabinet to put your things into. The room was clean, well-kept and quiet. Great water pressure in the bath.
The daily housekeeping service did their job with one exception. Our bathroom amenities were never refilled during the week we stayed. While we never did completely run out of soap or shampoo, we were using it sparingly to make sure we had enough. We did completely run out of kleenex a couple of days before departure. Thankfully, they did replenish the TP!
The restaurant - the staff is wonderful, pleasant and hard-working. The food was lovely. 5-course dinners each night. Always a vegetarian alternative entree. You will not go hungry. Good wine list at decent prices. Friday evening we partook of the traditional fondue.
The hotel has wi-fi. Just head to the lobby, and it works like a charm.
Check-out was smooth. The bill was correct. The proprietess bade us farewell and the porter took us up the hill to the train station.
I miss Wengen and the sounds of the cow/sheep/goat bells already.
