“A hotel that lives up to the Beauty of its Location”
Reviewed September 30, 2009

Spent 10 night here at the end of August. Best hotel I have staying it for many years!

The room was High Standard, bright, spacious, cleaner and with a nice balcony. The free minbar (soft drinks and beer) which is replenished daily was a nice bonus. The little extras( Umbrellas on loan, Bathrobes, Sawing Kit...) were so well thought out, down to every detail!

Staff could not do enough to help and were so lovely. They all spoke at least basic english, even the Housekeeping lady. What a lovely welcome.

The food was fabulous, plenty of choice. Their Swiss buffet and desert buffet are to die for! Drinks with meals and at the bar can be quite pricey, but why spoil the holiday. The carafe of water on the table every evening is a nice touch.

Oliver the Manager is a really character and will do anything to assist his guests.

The Swimming Pool and Sauna are very clean and the pool is so welcoming after a long day in the mountains. Towels are in plentiful supply too.

The hotel is in the main street but as no traffic, it is still really quiet. There is a little food stor and bakery nearby and it is just a couple minutes walk from the Cable Car.

All in all, I could not recommend it more. Our holiday at the Sunstar in Wenegn was just Fantastic. Would go back there year after year.

Set against a view of stage scenery of snow capped mountains and green lush hills, the Sunstar at Wengen is brilliantly situated. Very close by to the Mountain Train Station and opposite the cable car up to the Mannlichen mountain, coming back from a days' hiking and roaming with tired legs couldn't be easier!
The friendly and respectful service from all of the staff is outstanding - nothing is too much trouble. The manager, Oliver is a breath of fresh air due to his enthusiasm and love of his work and the surrounding countryside.
The bedrooms are not only cleaned and tidied every morning but also given a "homely touch" whilst you are at evening dinner with the quilts and pillows made ready for sleeping- and a chocolate and summary for the next days' weather left upon each pillow.
The food is exquisite and in a fortnight's stay we did not have any part of any meal repeated. We were lucky enough to be at the Sunstar for Swiss National Day (1st August) and the Chef and his assistants presented us with the most fantastically created buffet I have evr seen and tasted. There was always a huge basket of fresh fruit in the reception area from which we could help ourselves at any time.
The Sunstar also has a lovely, large indoor swimming pool surrounded by relaxing loungers, leading out to a very restful and pretty garden area with padded cushion loungers and parasols.
We would definitely stay at the Sunstar when we return to Wengen.

We visited the Sunstar Hotel Wengen for one week. Our room was on the third floor overlooking the Manlichen Cable Car. The outlook from the room was fine, and we discounted upgrading to a better room immediately. Overall we were very happy with the hotel. Although some courses at the evening meal could be bettered, by the end of the week , which included a special Swiss buffet dinner and a special sweet buffet on another night, food was judged to be very acceptable. The hotel has a large swimming pool which is very refreshing. The situation of the hotel is very good, being in the centre of the village and just a very few minutes from the station.

This is the 5th year we have stayed in this hotel, whilst the management and most of the staff have now changed the standards of the hotel still remain excellent. We prefer to have a village view room with balcony preferably on the 3rd floor. The food still remains of an excellent standard and the service in the restaurant is always what you expect of a first class hotel, all staff have a very friendly attitude to all the guests. Centrally situated and ideal for access to the transport systems. The swimming pool is one of the best in the region for an indoor pool.
This year we ventured into the next valley beyond Gross Scheidegg which you can get to by bus, from here you can either walk direct down the valley to Schwarzwaldalp or go by bus ,every other bus continues to a Schwarzwaldalp. The alternative is to take the ridge route to First, after about a mile you come to a hut with a signpost Romantikweg follow this eventualy coming to more huts from here you can go direct down the valley to Schwarzwaldalp right turn or carry on left upwards into woods and eventually to a zig zag down ward path eventually reaching Schwarzwaldalp. If you walk down the valley to Rossenlau you will encounter a glorious waterfall and glacier gorge which you can climb (small fee) if really in the spirit you can carry onto the Glacier but allow plenty of time. At Schwarzwaldalp there is a restored woodmil driven by water built 1896

Our room was very comfortable and very clean. Food was excellent and we enjoyed the visit to see the Kitchens. Staff were pleasant and friendly and took pride in their work. Pool was very pleasant and the garden peaceful. Being 5 mins. from station made excursions easy. Staff in dining room helpful and attentive. We particularly liked being met at the station and having our luggage transferred. Manager very pleasant and his hotel is an excellent holiday experience.

This large and comfortable hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Wengen, with the posibility of skiing right to your door, if you can avoid the pedestrians!

However, it is not the fantastic views (the wrap around panorama of mountains makes this an inevitability) or the moderately sized, but wonderfully clean the rooms. It is the fantastic staff , who will go to any lengths to make your trip as comfortable as possible and the wonderful food.

The managers, Oliver and Katya are personable and will not ask their staff to do anything they won't do themselves, including dressing up in full pirate regalia for the New Year's Eve celebrations (excellent service!). Grant, the wonderful Scottish restaurant manager (who makes the best porridge in the Alps, guaranteed) and his team were particularly helpful when 2 of our party fell ill and could not make it to lunch.

The hotel also has a bar with a wonderful ambience, musical accompaniment in the evenings and a wide variety of activities- it is very family friendly, with a play room, films for the children on some evenings and a dedicated children's buffet. The snowshoe hike is highly recommended (Peter , the guide is very helpful and patient) but is only recommended unless you have moderate fitness and a supply of plasters!

Thanks for the wonderful trip and we'll see you again next year!

Wengen is a beautifull almost vehicle free village and the Sunstar is right in the middle of town only a short walk from the station and a very short walk to the Mannlichen Cable car.
Ideal situation for every activity, the staff were extremely attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel has a new manager and he was great always stopping to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. We had a valley facing room with a balcony, very clean and comfortable, the room was attended to twice a day. There had been quite a lot of refurbishments to the ground floor in the Autumn with new doors windows and carpets, very smart. Having read previous reviews we were scheptical about the food in the restaurant. We were absolutely delighted with the quality, presentation and variety and all for 38chf per person, one night we had a 6 course meal for this incredible price!
Would thouroughly recommend the Sunstar to anyone going to stay in Wengen
