Sunstar Alpine Hotel Wengen
Ranked #6 of 20 Hotels in Wengen
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Just spent a week at the Sunstar, having been there several times before. You don't return again and again if it does not come up to scratch! All the staff are efficient, friendly and accommodating. Ask and it is responded to.
The rooms were clean and well furnished, serviced twice a day, which included changing towels twice a day, and the mini bar is a real bonus for those late night drinks.
I don't know where AVDude looked for his breakfast! Even at 9.30 am the breakfast buffet was well stocked. There was more than enough choice of hot and cold foods and fruit always available. Where else do you get a choice of four or five different breads to slice into?
The evening meal on half board provided ample choice to suit all tastes of international cuisine. The chef always had an 'extra' option of a typical Swiss dish as well.
I noticed that on a very wet afternoon two members of the staff went out of their way to set up children's DVDs and other activities to amuse the younger guests.
Walking sticks, fleece jackets and umbrellas in the entrance to borrow.
Not the cheapest in Wengen but probably the best value.
Watch out Oliver, we are coming back. Perhaps you family will have grown, again.

Room Tip: If you want to watch the snow capped mountains, choose the valley view.

We have just returned from spending a most enjoyable holiday in Wengen, and can heartily recommend the Sunstar as the place to stay. The staff in all departments are always friendly and helpful. Oliver and Katya lead this team in a very efficient and cheerful manner. Breakfast and dinner were of a consistently high quality in terms of choice, service and preparation. The hotel was shown in its best light on the evening of a BBQ dinner served in the garden. The thought and work put into the event was not spoilt by a spectacular thunderstorm with hailstones the size of large marbles. The staff took it all in their stride to ensure that all guests stayed dry and enjoyed the excellent food. Our room overlooking the valley was spacious and comfortable with lots of proper hangers! The pool is a great facility and is scrupulously clean. We will certainly use the Sunstar for another visit to Wengen.

Revisiting Wengen and the Sunstar after 15 years absence, and now with two children in tow. The very good points were the staff, Oliver the manager is extremely attentive, and has wonderful knowledge of the area, and he helped us get our car fixed for an excellent price down in Lauterbrunnen. We used the pool every day in the afternoon after our day in the mountains, very nice facilities in the pool area, warm enough for us, and we sat in the garden in the sun too. Our two rooms were very nice, we had a superior double with a view over the valley, and a single which had two beds for the girls, and this too was a very good sized room, and easily accommodated the both of them, with a little seating area and balcony. Free mini bar was a bonus, particularly with kids. The rooms probably need updating, and the bathroom by today's standards is small and lacking wow, but hey, how much time do you spend in there anyway. Americans, you do NOT need air conditioning, you are in the mountains for goodness sake, enjoy the fresh air! A slight downer for me was dinner, we were half board, which is financially a good deal as food in Wengen is horrendously expensive, but I didn't really like the style. Years ago it was much more international, now it is very German, they are promoting local cuisine, which is good, but only great if you like German food, sadly I don't. The "meatloaf" was awful, don't expect mince, tomato sauce and herbs and spices, this is a white sausage type concoction, something lost in the translation I believe. My husband and kids liked it more though, and the salad bar and the breakfasts were fine. The Swiss evening was also nice, as you had more choices, and could put together your own dinner. My final note is on Wengen rather than the hotel itself, as it applies equally to all the hotels...... you will find that the area is now full of Japanese day trippers, hundreds of them. They arrive on the evening trains, book in to the hotels, have dinner, and are then up in the early hours for their trip to the Jungfrau. Take earplugs! They are in general very nice and polite, but sadly in such great numbers they have detracted from the ambience, and Wengen itself has lost some of it's heart. Having said all of the above, in summary, we had a fantastic week up in the mountains, spent a shed load of cash, but on balance we experienced the most beautiful of scenery, stunning mountains, walked a lot, got fit, and the girls were even impressed enough to say they wanted to return..... high praise from a 10 and 16 year old!

Room Tip: Our superior double on the valley side was perfect, also for two older kids, the single rooms but wi...

Very nice hotel in the beautiful Jungfrau region. Service is excellent, real Swiss hospitality. Twice a day service in the room, including free minibar, little sweets and the weather forecast. Good breakfast buffet and dinner.

We are a family of 5 (children 10,7 & 5) and all had an excellent stay at the Sunstar. All of the staff were extremely kind, courteous and very efficient.
The location of the hotel was perfect, Wengen is a quiet town, so you don't suffer from noise, but the Sunstar is at the heart of the town, so everywhere is fairly close.
You can't go wrong here and when we do go back to Wengen, we won't bother checking on other hotels, we will just make sure the Sunstar has availability.

Room Tip: Rooms on both sides of the Hotel were great for views. Both had views of the surrounding mountains...

This was our third visit to the Sunstar, and we weren't disappointed. Although it has been three years since our last trip, it was great to see that Oliver and the team were as attentive as ever, and really can't do enough for you. The turn down service with a chocolate on the bed each night is always a nice touch.
Our room was on the top floor overlooking the valley and sitting on the balcony, enjoying the contents of the free mini bar, watching the sun go down was just perfect.
Despite it being very busy when we were there - and extremely hot! - the service in the restaurant was first class, and Oliver still makes a point of visiting each table to ask about your day and check that everything is ok. - whatever language you speak!
Wengen is a great place to stay when visiting the region, and if you want a central hotel with fantastic views, good food and great service, this is the place to stay!

Room Tip: Higher rooms with a valley view are good

Stayed here in late June 2013. Very nice and clean room, but small bathroom. Comfortable beds with comforters and you can request extra pillows of various types. Very nice views from our porch on the 3rd floor. Conveniently close walking distance to the train station. Very good front desk service. Only negative was the "included breakfast buffet" was very limited. The eggs were the runny powdered instant type eggs. Only had fresh fruit on 1 of 4 mornings. Otherwise a great stay and I would return again knowing I need to go elsewhere for breakfast. Hotel restaurant is very expensive for lunch or dinner, but so are most restaurants in Wengen. Luckily there are 2 grocery stores where you can get some responsibly priced snacks and prepared salads and such.

Room Tip: Upper floors have a better view. No air conditioning here, but that was not a problem even in the ho...
