“Old but with character”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

No doubt it is an old hotel but this is an award-winning one. The managers and staff are excellent. And the dog, Caramel, OMG so lovely!!!

We arrived in summer end of May 2013, and it was snowing heavily. The snow was quite thick and it's just pure fun. Temperature was minus 10 degrees.

The room was okay, I had a balcony that I cannot use because of the freezing temperature outside. Extra blankets was necessary.

Our group had a pot luck party at the lobby with its beautiful fireplace and with chairs and sofas of all shapes and sizes and piano to keep ourselves entertained.

Room Tip: High floor, preferably with balcony

I stayed in the ski season in Hotel Regina, and it was a terrible experience. The hotel needs a complete RENOVATION, as it is very old and lots of things are broken down. I had wall paper coming down in my room, which was not repaired during the whole week (see picture). I asked the dutch speaking manager for compensation in the form of a nice bottle of wine, but he consulted the owner of the hotel, and said that he could not do anything.
The hotel is very dirty.

The Regina is worth a visit even though it has seen better days. We went at the end of the season for my Birthday and all in all I enjoyed it but the bedrooms are in desperate need of a re-furb. More worringlyl a tile fell off the roof on to our balcony - which could have been nastyhad we been sitting there. I loved the staff especially the Manager Guido who was definitely in the right job however, it was more like Fawlty Towers than top knotch - especially on the day of the staff party - where we seemed to be the only people in the hotel apart from Guido. The food that night was pretty dreadful and the pumpkin soup was more akin to washing up water than anything to do with a pumpkin. Not sure the food in general could be described as haute cuisine - but they make an effort. I think the wine list is fairly good but pricey - but consistent with our experience elsewhere in Wengen.

It is worth a visit but largely because of its faults and quirks.

Please note if you are a skier there are no boot warmers - but you can ski down to the cable car.

Room Tip: All rooms have a balcony - but I suspect it is worth upgrading.

We loved our stay and having the owner greet us daily with a smile made us feel like we were at home and very comfortable. The food and service was fantastic and truly first class. I agree with other postings that the hotel needs a freshening up and was obvious when we first arrived but over the first few days, did not matter as we grew enchanted with our hosts. Staying at the Hotel Regina really gave me an understanding of what the "personal touch" means and how much it can sway your opinion. Most five star hotels excell at the guest experience and so does Mr. Mayer, the owner.
Well done and thank you

Room Tip: The jr suites are unique but get a high floor for an exquisite view of the mountains

We sayed at the hotel in February 2013 for a week. The saff were helpful and pleasant. our room was adequate warm but very small, but definitely not 4 star decor or furnishings. The set meals in the restaurant were very very restrictive with small portions. There was no salad or dessert buffet. Some of the dishes were very meagre-three prawns in a main course dish! Really? We did bring this to the hotels attention but the next time I had a prawn main course I still had three prawns. The service was good in the restaurant but the charge of 8 Swiss francs for the hotels bottled tap water is an absolute disgrace and rip off, and not made clear. It was like staying on the Titanic - the ship was going down but the staff were polite and the band kept playing. I would not choose this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a large room with a balcony overlooking town

I cannot believe that this hotel classifies itself as a four star hotel, I agree that it should be rated two star. We stayed in a double room in which we were cold every single night even after the heater was supposedly fixed. Disgusting pink granny floral decor (everything from carpets to curtains) and ancient style bathroom with ugly yellow shower curtains (they need a serious lesson in interior design for charging such exorbitant prices). Yes, the view outside is magnificent but I felt sick coming into the room and bathroom. The stairwells and hallways also smell old and have faint small of cigarettes and just general aging.
The spa is a joke - it has a fitness center that resembles something from the Middle Ages (how dare they call this a 24 hour gym?) and a "spa" in which only massages are available. If you call yourself a beauty center hotel, surely you must offer more than just massages? And absolutely right on the sauna and steam room - they were disgusting and felt scary to even sit inside. This is NOT four star facilities whatsoever.
Now on the plus side: the reception staff are truly wonderful (except the grumpy one who works in the evenings, that one needs a lesson in client service). Super helpful in every way possible, really great. If only they can upgrade the hotel to even half the level of the receptionists, that would be an immense jump. They also have a nice idea to be able "borrow" the hotel dog for walks and proceeds go to cancer research - a great idea!
But if the hotel front desk staff and the dog are the only memorable parts of my stay, then one can see there is a serious problem with this hotel. I was very unhappy with the price I paid and I would never come back.
I would classify this hotel as not "old school charm" but "old school dump".

the cost of the hotel is like for the most luxurous 4* hotel , while actually what you get is equivaent to 2* hotel.
The SPA fassislities are very poor. a super mini wet sauna and broken chairs , with not even water to drink. , and the food slection is very poor. You would expect to have from a gourmet hotel to have a selctions of foods and buffets and some variations fromday to day , but here it is very boring.
