I visited This place in April. You take a train from interlaken to lauterbrunen and then further by a post bus which takes you to the ropeway point. The view from this point is fantastic with all all snow covered peaks. Murren is allso a popular sking resort in the start of the alps.

I thank God for the great weather we had and it felt like you were very close to heaven, it was the highlight of my trip to Europe. The revolving restaurant was amazing and the food excellent. Would go back in a heartbeat! Lovely and half the price from the Jungfrau.

During 2 weeks of rainy weather in Interlaken we had found one good day to go up to Jungfraujoch.
Now at last the weather has improved and we took the opportunity to go up the Schilthorn today.
What a revelation! The views are stunning - better than can be seen from the Jungfrau viewing platforms - with the most famous mountains - Eiger, Monck and Jungfrau in clear view and dozens of other peaks and in the distance down to Lake Thun and further.

The Jungfrau is a destination with several other attractions built in to the trip - see the many reviews on this website - but the Schilthorn is mainly a destination designed to allow perfect viewing of the mountains. The outside viewing decks are superior and the revolving restaurant gives 360 degree views in one hour. Food and drinks are more pricey than at valley level, but in our opinion worth every penny - a simple lunch of one sandwich and large fries shared between two (plenty enough) and a large beer and a large glass of wine cost 33.40 swiss francs.

Yes, there is an 007 Bond attraction - because one of the Bond films had some scenes filmed at that location - but the over-riding purpose of the trip is to admire the scenery. On a good day it's amazing.

We drove to Stechelburg and took the gondola up from there to Murren and changed to another gondola for the top of the Schilthorn. On the return trip we came down to Murren ( a pretty village which we had visited before), then walked on an easy paved track (wheelchiar friendly so long as you have good brakes!) to the mid-way station at Gimmelwald, then took the gondola the rest of the way down. We could have walked all the way down, but the second leg is said to be a tough challenge because of steep paths.
For those without a car, a good round trip would be from Interlaken Ost by train to Lauterbrunnen, then postbus (or walk up the valley) to Stechelberg then Gondola to the top via Murren. For the return one could take the cog railway down from Murren to Grutschalp (or a lovely one and a half hour walk down hill), then the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen, then train back to Interlaken.
The ticket staff at all stations and cable car bases are very helpful and will tailor tickets for the entire trip in advance, missing out sections that that you wish to walk.

We were lucky with a beattiful clear day (just some lower level cloud in the Lauterbrunnen valley).
If we had known how good this was we wouldn't have bothered with the Jungfrau. If you have binoculars - take them with you. And, of course a camera. And wait for a clear day - most tourist information offices and nearby train and cablecar ticket offices have webcam views of the tops of the Schilthorn and/or the Jungfrau so you have a good idea of what you will find when you get up there. But the weather can change quickly in the mountains so take advice. In the sunshine, it will be warm, even up high, but you need a sweater in case cloud comes over and the temperature can drop quickly.

We decided to take the journey despite knowing the top including the Piz Gloria restaurant would be in cloud. As we ascended, the snow came thicker and faster, by the time we got to the top visibility was very limited, however we made the most if the deep snow and played some great games. The restaurant isn't cheap, but I can't think you would pay any less in any other revolving restaurant.
A must do, regardless of weather conditions

We went there after on partly clear afternoon, views on the way up overlooking the mountains are amazing, on top also you get great views. Revolving restaurant can be visited but not worthy of having anything due to price. You get to play with snow little if its deposited on the top platform. On the way back, dont miss the walk into the villages from Murren cable car station to Train station. Its something that you shouldn't miss.
