“Can't beat the views and hikes from Chalet Fontana”
Reviewed July 19, 2010

You must stay here! Our windows opened up to magnificent views of Jungrau (and other mountains). Good breakfast and lovely hostess--Denise is very knowledgeable of the area and can recommend fantastic hikes and activities. There is a co-op close by for picnics and complimentary tea in the Chalet...a perfect way to relax after a good hike. We loved the people we met there and would go back in a heartbeat. A great place for the price. Murren is large enough to have necessities, yet small enough to stay quaint and charming. Can't wait to plan our return trip.

Myself, my spouse, and our 22 year old daughter stayed at Chalet Fontana for 7 days in mid-June 2010. This was the second time we had stayed here in the past 2 years. We stayed in a triple room for 125 francs per night for 2 nights and then moved to the apartment the last 5 nights for 160 francs per night as we had stayed in the apartment 2 years ago and loved it. The chalet is right in the middle of Murren and right across from the grocery store and the bank. The B&B has 4 rooms on the 2nd floor with 2 shared bathrooms--one on the second floor and one on the first floor at the end of the hallway. This was not a problem either day. The apartment is on the first floor and has its own private bathroom and can sleep up to 6 people. The breakfast was good with fresh-baked bread, yogurt, cereal. and nutella. But the real reason to stay here is Denise. She has not changed in two years. She answered my many e-mails promptly, is great suggesting things to do, has the cleanest b&b I have stayed in, and tries to please all her guests. She does only take cash for payment. When we came here 2 years ago, we did not see the mountains due to the cloudy, drizzly weather. It was the same this time for the first 5 days. It even snowed our second day. But the last 2 days it was beautiful so we could go to the Jungfrau, the Schiltorn, and paragliding. We all would love to come back to Chalet Fontana-----when it is sunny because the views are the most beautiful in the world.

Just now writing a review as I was on Trip Advisor to ask a question for another holiday and thought I really must add to the reviews for this great little place! I stayed with my partner and teenage daughter and was worried they might get bored as there was no TV, wireless etc and also not much nightlife to speak of (my partner likes a beer and a chat!). However, we all loved it. The village was beautiful. We stayed in October and got a little bit of sun and then snow which was great, being up in the mountains. We stayed one night in the chalet and one night in the apartment next door - which was fantastic. It has two bedrooms and a lovely kitchen - we were able to go to the supermarket across the road and cook a roast. We chatted to the others guests in the sitting room in the main chalet and Denise was as everyone says - really relaxed, knowledgeable and a big plus for me - made you feel really welcome and comfortable. The breakfast was absolutely fine, the location perfect - co-op and cash point across the road and plenty of hikes, the stunning views - I could go on and on. Also have to comment on the price - fantastic value and you really need it as Switzwerland is pretty pricey! Would have stayed another night if I hadn't pre-booked somewhere else for the following (which was a bit of a let-down after staying at Chalet Fontana). Defintely recommend Murren and the Chalet Fontana if you can book it. Lastly, saw some cows going down the road outside the window with their bells - so Swiss, loved it! Also not to forget the free pass to local swimming pool - we didn't use it as we were not there for long, but how great is that? If I were to go back to Murren (which I would like to some day) I would absolutely stay here again.

seldom it happens that a hotel becomes so dear to you that you keep wanting to go back, like a second home! that's chalet fontana for me! it has lots of limitations.... but I am sorry... I am biased...I cannot help it...this place spells memories and cozy times and I want to go back!

the bernese oberland is possibly the most stunning region of switzerland not to be missed on a trip there. I initially wanted to stay in gimmelwald but could not find an accomodation there that offered everything I wanted ( sorry rick steves!), so went with muerren...just because of this hotel. and the hotel has stayed with me since then!

location in muerren is excellent, right on the main road of this charming, tiny car-free mountain village in the alps. very conveniently located midway between the station and the cable car, 1 minute walk from a co-op store and bank. the crowning point- right opposite it stands my favorite restaurant in switzerland- the stager stubli! a tiny little mountain eatery with stunning views and lip- smacking swiss food, dont miss the lamb, pork, rosti and raclette!

the chalet itself is just too charming. its a small wooden mountain chalet with a large and welcoming living room where one spends cozy evenings chatting with fellow travellers and reading. very comfortable rooms, but no attached bathrooms. One large, clean and modern shared bathroom per floor...but never had any problems using it.

no arrangement to eat inside, but you can make unlimited tea/coffee in the kitchen with all provided items. a tasty, but limited, breakfast is served in the drawing room every morning to share with your fellow traveelers in the same table. fresh bread, cheese, butter, milk, jam, cereals and coffee. Denise is a charming hostess and very helpful.

2 tips- travel light to muerren for u will have to walk dragging luggage from the station. carry enough woolens as the weather is predictable and preferably check the weather in the village before heading there!

The views from our large, comfortable room were incredible. The breakfasts and chat with other guests and Denise were very enjoyable. Denise was a fount of information on trails & views. She encouraged guests to share experiences and that added a lot to our enjoyment. Murren is an incredible place, and the Chalet is right in the middle of it and a very good value for this small, in-demand location. We would love to go back and stay with Denise again. And go to the cheese store around the corner to get your lunch of local cheeses. Guests can use the local pool/fitness center. Cash only for the b&B!

Our Family of seven, including five teens and pre-teens, ended our European vacation with a stay at the Chalet Fontana in Murren and were not ready to leave when the time came. Denise, the owner/operator, is the reason to stay at this property. She took care of our every need and when you are dealing with older teens who have already been in Europe for ten days, that can be a tall order. We stayed in three separate rooms with shared bathing arrangements and never found any issue with access to the facilities. When you stay with Denise, it is like staying with your long lost best friend. I would not hesitate to recommend the Chalet Fontana to anyone planning a visit to this beautiful region.

Our group of high school students rented the entire Chalet for 4 nights. As usual, the rooms were clean, Denise was perfect and breakfast was very nice. If only the weather had cooperated as nicely...

Muerren is the place to be to experiences the true Alpine Village atmosphere. Chalet Fontana does not currently have wi-fi although the local post office offers free wi-fi to parts of the village. You can pick up the signal while sitting on the bench in front of the Chalet. One of our students was also able to pick up the signal from one of the upstairs bedrooms.

We love Chalet Fontana and Denise and Muerren.
