We stayed at the Chalet Fontana for two nights in May 2009. We traveled from London down to souther Italy, and this was definetly our favorite accomodation! It's a charming Swiss Chalet, run very efficiently by Denise (an excellent host). The rooms and shared bathrooms were sparkling clean and the breadfast in the morning included a delicious granola, milk, juice and fresh bread. The town of Murren itself is wonderful. There is a handy ATM across the street from the Chalet and also an amazing restuarant called the Stagestubli (try the Racletti, to DIE for!). I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone! You won't be disappointed!

First, Denise is organized and very nice. The Chalet is extremely clean, which to us is one of the top things we look for. We had to share a bathroom, which is never ideal, but it worked out ok. We stayed in the large (HUGE) loft at the top of the house with windows facing the street and amazing mountain views. There was a mirror and sink in the room. The down blankets and pillows were the best! There was a little table and two chairs in front of the window - very relaxing. No TV. It was 90 per night (cash only - ATM across street outside of bank) including breakfast. Breakfast was decent, with coffee, orange juice, bread with nutella, jams, etc, and granola with yogart. Denise left all sorts of assorted teas and tea kettles/cups downstairs so we can easily make tea at any time.
If you are staying during the off-season (May) then this location is ideal because it is across from a good restaurant and grocery store - there were more people around, whereas on the other side of of Murren it was like a ghost town.If we came to Murren again, this is where we'd stay!

We stayed at the Chalet Fontana for four nights in September 2008. The town of Murren is lovely and I don't think I would want to stay anywhere else if we returned to the area. There is convenient transportation and the views are wonderful.

Denise was a joy to work with as I booked the room. She answered my emails very quickly and the price was great...by far the most affordable place we stayed on our trip. This helped us overlook some of the less comfortable things about the stay and would be the primary reason we would choose to stay here again.

We stayed in the smallest room at the chalet. It had a lovely view but be warned...the room is very small! This wasn't really a problem for us but I know it could be for some people. We had two single beds, with maybe a foot dividing them. That is the width of the room. At the foot of the bed is an armoire and then a table. At the foot of the other bed is a chair and a set of hooks to hang your coats. There is a sink in the room. This is very helpful since you share two bathrooms with the other rooms (there are maybe 5 total rooms). I think that all of the rooms were booked while we were there and we never had an issue getting into the bathroom. Occasionally we would have to wait a few minutes but this didn't bother us.

The beds are only sort of comfortable and the house is wooden, so it does creak quite a bit when someone is in the room overhead. If you are a light sleeper, this could bother you. I used a pair of foam earplugs while sleeping but my husband didn't even notice the creaking.

Denise includes a nice breakfast. When we were there, we had a few types of cereal, fresh breads with spreads, yogurt, coffee & tea. At breakfast, Denise would give us suggestions about things in the area, especially if the weather was not cooperating. We were glad that we had several days in Murren as the views are amazing...in clear weather. For two days of our stay there were lots of clouds and it blocked some of the beautiful mountains.

The breakfast room has a few couches and it is a nice place to spend an evening. I don't know if this is normal, but during our stay, everybody spoke English as a first language even though we were from several different countries. Because most things close early, my husband and I found ourselves without much to do after dinner. We decided to read in the living room and let the other guests know that they were welcome to join us. This worked out really well! We spent several nights talking and laughing with new friends and this is one of our most cherished memories of our entire trip.

Four nights was a good amount of time to spend in Murren at this time of year. Though a guidebook might not highlight much to do in the area, we found that we could have spent even more time in Murren. There are lots of hikes (of varying degrees of difficulty) and there is easy access to the Schilthorn by cable car. Plus, we enjoyed exploring the valley around Lauterbrunnen and loved our trip up to the Jungfraujoch (across the valley).

My husband and I stayed at Chalet Fontana mid July (12-14) and we absolutely LOVED it. We were fortunate to get one of the big loft rooms that was beside the bathroom upstairs. It was very spacious and roomy. Denise was absolutely fabulous and gave us many tips and helped us out with maps, directions, weather and more. Her sunny disposition was wonderful on a daily basis! Breakfast is simple but my husband and I were MORE than happy with it. It was very comfortable and close to everything in Murren. Denise also helped us out when I lost my purse in Interlaken and knew immediately who to call and we were able to retrieve it safe and sound. Staying at Chalet Fontana gives the feeling of staying in an authentic Swiss chalet. Loved the beds, duvets etc. It was so comfortable! The weather did end up sucking as we travelled there to see the Alps and didnt get to see it because the weather was terrible and cloudy so we didnt get the mountain views that we liked. Denise gave us some ideas of things to do to keep us occupied despite the weather. We will definitely have to come back and will stay at Chalet Fontana again. Thanks Denise!

We stayed at the Chalet Fontana for 4 nights in September, 2008 and could not have asked for a better base to enjoy the Berner Oberland region. The chalet was clean well cared for and we enjoyed staying in such quaint accommodations. The rooms are basic but everything was adequate. Staying at Chalet Fontana make us feel like we were returning home every evening after our hikes and we truly had a fantastic time there.
Denise Fusell is a wonderful host and was able to give good advice for hiking and other activities in the area. I would recommend this chalet without hesitation.

The chalet is charming and the owner Denise is a friendly lady. The place is very clean and breakfast is decent. However, I would rate this only 2 star based on my personal experience and here is why:

There are five rooms in the Chalet (not counting the apartment). Three large rooms - room 2, 4 and the loft room. These rooms are large double room with an extra bed. Room 1 and 3 are very tiny rooms - almost half the size of other three room and can be called single or very small double. When I booked the room, I was specifically told that we will be getting one of the large triple loft room available. I was quoted price for the large room which is 90 sfr (small rooms go for about 65-70 sfr) per night for 2 adults and additinal 35 sfr for a 2 year old child, making it 120 sfr per night. . Usually all places allow young kids wihtout any extra charge but not chalent fontana.

Though Denise had confirmed in writing that we were getting the loft room, upon our arrival we found that we were placed in this tiny room number 1 facing the back of the building. Staying in that small room meant no space to walk, or for baggage AND no view. No apologies from Denise. We were simply put in there and the large room that was promised was rented to another couple. It was extremely difficult to stay in that room with a child since there is not enough space. We did see the larger room and any one of those room would have been perfect.

Not just that, at end of the stay - we were still charged for the full amount. i.e. we paid more than any other group staying in chalet at that time (since we were 2 adults and 1 child) and got the worse room.

I was really disappointed and wished that we had stayed at one of the hotel.

I just want to reiterate what has been said before about the apartment at Chalet Fontana. It is wonderful to stay there and Denise is terrific. But it would be hard for almost anyone to sleep in the front room of the apartment due to the noise from upstairs. Our family of four all stayed in the back room of the apartment for sleeping and it worked out fine for us since our children are young but it might be a problem for others. Otherwise, it is a terrific place to stay.
