Pension Sonnenberg
Reviewed August 7, 2011

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The Pension is run by Steve and his wife Monika. They are very friendly and make you feel right at home. Steve takes the time to talk to you and share interesting stories about the area and his adventures in Switzerland. He is also a great photographer and has many pictures documenting the scenery in the area. We had dinner at the Pension both nights as part of our reservation and Steve is also an excellent cook. The Pension's location is nestled right in a valley above Murren with incredible views and is a great starting point for hiking. The value was great and we highly recommend a visit to the Pension Sonnenberg!

Service was great - a personal welcome the moment we walked in the door, shown immediately to our room, then left in peace to settle and come back down in our own time. Nothing was a problem, staff were available from early in the morning until late at night.
The room was lovely (instead of a family room, we were given a 20-bed dorm to ourselves - plenty of room to spread out!), with a great view. The linen was clean & fresh, as were the towels.
Food was good, with breakfast and dinner included for a small additional charge. Breakfast was fresh bread with various spreads, cereal, juice, & hot chocolate or coffee. While there was no choice of meal at dinner, the meal served was the same as one of those available on the regular menu - not some 'cheap' alternative.
Overall, a great experience - set in a lovely valley, with a great view of the mountains opposite!

We stayed for two nights with two children and a friend. The booking process was very efficient and helpful. All questions answered. Being familiar with staying in youth hostels, we found the price awesome (for Switzerland), service excellent, and the food was very very good - surpassing all expectations. The hosts are wonderfully welcoming, and the place was also extremely clean and organised. We felt totally welcome and 'at home'.

If you want to be a 'tourist' and follow the crowds, then you can stay in Interlaken or Mürren, but if you want to really smell the fresh mountain air, the peace and quiet (plus cowbells and the sound of water flowing)...and the view....the view is awesome!

To get to the pension you need to take the train to Lauterbrunnen, Gondola to Mürren, walk through the town to the mountain railway station, and then walk downhill to the small valley to the guesthouse. We carried packs and it wasn't difficult. It gave us a sense of satisfaction as mountain travellers, and our 3 year old managed absolutely fine with it. In fact, having stayed in the town of Brienz and taken a mountain trip to Haslital a few weeks before, we specifically went looking for a 'mountain chalet' rather than a town location...

To save money on your transport costs, check the swiss tourism website www.sbb.ch and plan carefully, but it usually costs around 100chf to get to any of the 'big' mountains (Shilthorn, Jungfraujoch, Rigi, Pilatus, etc), and we even found a discount voucher for the schilthorn on the back of the brochure in the Tourist info centre in Murren.

If you don't want to pay the less than $5 per person to go up on the train to get back to your accommodation, you can always walk - about 30 - 45 minutes from the town, uphill, along the tourist trail...

Oh, and for kids they have a trampoline, friendly animals, plenty of space to run around, and some toys to play with on the terrace.

Having just climbed & descended the Shilthorn as part of our Tour of the Jungfrau it was a welcome sight to come down into Blumental and the Pension Sonnenberg. Steve was there to greet us, take our rucksacks upstairs & bring out a cold beer! Fab food and brilliant setting. Between flowers and alpen glow on the Jungfrau it will be hard to beat it. The best breakfast en route too. Enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra couple of nights!

The Pension Sonnenberg, under new management in the last few years, is a gorgeous pension, its pleasures are simple, and sustaining. Steve, the owner, is a fabulous cook, catering for all kinds of needs (the only tofu I've ever found on this wonderful mountain), the pension is traditional, but has all you need. I travelled with my family, and we had a lovely chalet room, with a view of a lifetime on to the Jungfrau.I've stayed in Murren a number of years now, and this has to be the best deal going -- a lovely hotel, delicious food, great people. The showers are shared, but they are so clean it was no problem, and waking every morning to the delicious breakfast, and the quiet of the upper valley was just the best - an early morning ski down to the village and you're first on the slopes. We were all in Jungfrau heaven.

We stayed at the Pension Sonnenberg at the tail end of a 2-day hiking trip in the Bernese Oberland and just loved it! The American/Swiss couple who ran the place were nice and friendly, and the location was perfect! In a nice and sunny (as the name suggests) perch on the hill with a gorgeous view of the Jungfrau, the terrace was perfect for a pre-dinner drink. I can only imagine that this place is packed in winter, when the ski slope goes right next to the Pension.

The lodging itself was also very good. We stayed in the dormitory, which was nice and not too large, and the rooms we saw also looked nice. There were plenty of washing facilities and everything was very clean. We had the half board and enjoyed both the dinner and breakfast, especially the breakfast, which was a nice spread of juice, coffee, meat, cheese and bread to get you going.

This place was indeed a little ways out of town about a 30 minute walk), but it wasn't too tough for us with our backpacks (we'd hiked much harder hills!), and we did see groups with luggage arriving in some sort of van, so transportation can undoubtably be arranged. While some people who are looking to party probably should stay in Mürren itself, we appreciated the peace and quiet just a little ways out of town.

Bah! worst snow ever this winter (06-07)...

I'm a solo traveller and i wanted to go skiing in der Schweiz in February. It was a very busy time because most of the French schoolchildren have these two weeks off...

Thankfully I stayed in Murren which has the highest altitude in all of the Bernese Oberland. In the 2006-2007 there was NO SNOW, so...

The only skiing was at the top of the Birg/Schilthorn lift. It was pretty crowded because the only way to the top is a cable car.

I stayed at the "Pension Sonnenberg"...Don't subject yourself to this residence unless you are with a large group or don't mind tons of noise/drunk businessmen/families with small children/spending tons of time hiking there if you don't have skis or a sled...

Even getting here is a problem as you have to take the cable car from Lauterbunnen to Grutschalp and then a train to Murren that goes through Winteregg. Then you have to walk to the "Allmenhubel" cable car out of Murren and walk about 15 minutes (downhill) to get to Sonnenberg...It costs 7Sfr to get up unless you have a ski pass.

Right, so according to the locals I talked to in the Murren rental shops and bars...If you're a backpacker, STAY IN GRINDELWALD in the summer. Apparently it's totally sweet and cheap. As with most hostels there'll be tons of Aussies.

For the Sonnenberg, you WILL have to hike yourself in and out unless you are a group then they can arrange transport for your stuff...

Bon chance...I passed the bluest river i have ever seen on my way up to Murren.
