Well, if you are a unconditional Sherlock Holmes fan, then I suppose you have to do this, but for the others this outing is not obligatory. The waterfall is fairly impressive (but the region offers also better) and the funicular is quaint, over 100 years old, but that is about it. If you are into waterfalls, but not into Sherlock, do the Giessbach falls on lake Brienz.

A trip to the Reichenbach Falls in late April became a non-event as it was rather derisively renamed the Reichenbach Trickle. Hardly any water falling, let alone cascading, down the gulleys even though there were plenty of other majestic waterfalls along the nearby lakes. Someone turned off the tap upstream? As for the restaurant at the top, hold your nose if you don't like fondue as the interior stank of cheese. Only redeeming feature was the pleasant walk down the trails to Meiringen, with excellent views.

The Reichenbach Falls is just outside Meiringen about 18 miles east of Interlaken and we recommend it to fans of the detective.

There is plenty of parking near the base station of the funicular railway that goes up a steep gradient to the top station that is just above the foot of the main falls. The train ride takes just a few minutes. A steep path with plenty of steps zig zags up to the top of the falls. There are view points en route with benches.

We visited the falls in the summer after a dry spell but they were nevertheless quite spectacular.

The official literature seems to show the top station about half way up the falls - in reality it is near the base. The walk up was more demanding than we were expecting and one of our party called it a day at one of the view points half way up.

If you get to the top there is a restaurant nearby where you can get anything from a well-earned ice cream to a full meal (including a Fondue at a reasonable price!).

There is quite a lot of spray at the foot of the falls so an umbrella or jacket with hood are a good idea.

Payment is by cash only to the conductor/driver of the train.

An X on the other side of the falls marks the supposed site of the fight between Holmes and Moriarty but looked to us to be too far from the waterfall!

The ride up the furnicular to the falls and the surrounding countryside is beautiful! There are great spots for photo ops including a Sherlock Holmes cut out. You can also hike up farther and look down at the falls.

Overall, Meiringen is a cute day trip with some interesting history. I recommend exploring the town and going to the surrounding sites like Aereaschlut (sp?).
