We spent 7 nights in Hotel Aspen and were very happy with the choice we had made.
As already mentioned by other travellers, the hotel is located about 5km from the center of Grindelwald - which accounts for great 360 degree views, but might be a problem for those without a car (not our case).
The hotel itself is delightfully picturesque on the outside, with its traditional wooden facade and the beautiful sun terrace. I would have loved, though, to see more flowers hanging from the balconies. Our room (facing Grindelwald) was quite large, very comfortable, spotlessly clean every day - not your typical chalet room though (a bit too modern and impersonal for me, alpine-style wood furniture would definitely have its charm). The balcony is common to all the rooms on a certain floor and side of the house, but we did not find that disturbing in any way. Each room has its own outdoor table and pair of chairs in its section of the balcony.
We arrived [very] late but enjoyed a warm and efficient welcome. The hotel appears to be owned by a nice, young, mountain-loving family. They live on the premises and are available in case of a medical emergency all night long. Upon arrival, we were provided with a handful of tourist guides on the area, which proved to be very useful and saved a lot of precious time on the following morning.
Breakfast is good rather than great, but the breakfast room is charming and has panoramic views over Grindelwald and the Eiger. The breakfast staff was very polite and helpful.
As other reviewers pointed out, the hotel restaurant is very good. Our best (and most expensive, for that matter) dinner in the Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen area was at the hotel: very good service, creative cuisine, lovely traditional ambiance.
All in all, we had a great stay in a valley that is beautiful beyond words - would defintely recommend both the village/area and the hotel.

Grindelwald is really a must visit location and this hotel is a great place to stay. It is out of the main village area on the opposite hill, which is a fantastic location. It looks like a traditional Swiss hotel but has all the modern conveniences. We had a family room which was very large and had 2 sets of single bunk beds and one set of double-bunk beds plus a lounge area. We had only 5 people in the room (2 adults and 3 children aged 4, 6 and 8) and it was certainly big enough for all of us. Breakfast and dinner were fantastic and the kids were made to feel very welcome. We can't wait to return!

We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in September with our little daughter. The hotel is located out of town on the slope and offers nice views on the town below and peaks around. It’s terrace faces the North Face of Eiger – amazing. During the night you can see the light of the train station viewing point in the North Face. Next to the hotel is a bus stop. We used our car, the hotel has a free parking next to it. Rooms are comfortable, clean and new. Food was simply great – tasty and well presented. It was well above avarege in comparison with other establishments in Grindelwald area. Managers/owners are great and friendly. There is a small Kids’ Corner with a lot of toys that we appreciated. Right from the hotel’s doorstep you can venture on many walks.

Must do excursion is the train ride to Jungfraujoch. The train goes first to the pass - Kleine Scheidegg and there you take another train to Jungfraujoch through the long tunnel digged into Eiger. Details you can find on the website of Jungfraubahn. On the way back (and if you have a stamina even on the way there) you might opt to walk to the hotel from one of several train stations instead of going all the way down. The trip is pricey, it is 100 euros Grindelwald-Jungfraujoch and back.

The area offers many hiking opportunities of different difficulty. I very much like the First area on the opposite side of the valley.

Grindelwald itself is more or less one long street lined with hotels. When they close shops at six it becomes very quite, the streets emptied fairly quickly.

We love mountains and do a lof of hiking. Although it was very nice and we liked it there, we do not intend to return anytime soon. However, if we do return we will definitely stay in this hotel.

Old Rooms furniture, not maintained and not cleaned (the bathroom floor is slugged with soap and it seems no one did water wash them for long time). Spider’s nets are in corridor and room corners and lamp covers.

No one is willing to answer the reception calls and if the owner did it will be rough answer (not expected at all…???).

Grindelwald is very nice area, however make sure that you have the right hotel.

Nice hotel a bit on the outskirts of Grindelwald, with wonderful views and awesome food. There is a bus that stops right at the hotel every hour to take you into town.

Hotel Aspen is a little gem, just above the town of Grindelwald, and right beside one of the best ski runs in the area.

We had a great time there, appreciated the service, and food was well above what you would normally find in a hotel of this price level. Dinner (at sfr 33 a head, some £20) was no less than 4 courses and almost always very good. Likewise for breakfast (included in room rate).

The only tiny downside is that it is somewhat out of town, so don't plan on regular trips down. The skibus stops outside the hotel. Just make sure you get on the right one, as the next one may not be for another hour or so. That said, I am sure that during most of the ski season you won't need the bus, as the run past the hotel will get you away in the morning, and back at the end of the day
