Had a very enjoyable stay this week. A stunning, immaculate hotel, right at the foot of the Eiger with the most amazing views imaginable!
Although we opted for the standard room, it was beautiful, a good size and best of all had a huge wrap-around balcony with views directly up to the Eiger. Very comfortable beds and we also had a fridge, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers. There was water in the fridge when we arrived though this wasn't replenished on a daily basis.
We stayed on a half-board basis and it was superb! The chef here is award-winning and it shows. Every dish was imaginative, tasty and presented beautifully!
We were not sure what to expect with the half-board option. We wondered if we would be ordering from the restaurants al a carte menu, with supplements added on for the more expensive dishes.... In actual fact there is a stunning 5 course menu specifically for those staying on half-board, which changed every day. An amuse-bouche followed by choice of two soups, then a choice of two salads, then mains (three options - meat, fish or vegetable) then a choice of two desserts....! We found it well worth the money.
Bear in mind though that the restaurant closes on a Wednesday, which we were not aware of. Those on half-board are instead offered a more basic dinner of fondue with lots of bread, potatoes, dried meat, vegetables and fruit, plus a simple salad starter and dessert. I was fine about this as I could not wait for my first taste of fondue and it was absolutely delicious! Just something you might want to bear in mind if you do pay for half-board on a Wednesday.
Good breakfasts taken in a stunning room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Grindelwald, the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn! Tea and coffee was a bit hard to get hold of though. Also, there was no hot option, although this didn't bother us at all as the breads, meats, cheese and pastries were delicious!
There was plenty of outdoor free parking. We rented a car and for us we found this more convenient as the hotel is about a 10 minute drive from Grund and the village. However there were buses passing the hotel all the time so a car isn't essential to get there.
We can't comment on the spa facilities as we were not brave enough to go nude :-) We wished we were though because based on the rest of the hotel I'm sure the spa is divine!
All in all it was a wonderful stay and quite frankly we can't wait to return!
