“Wonderful!”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

Had a very enjoyable stay this week. A stunning, immaculate hotel, right at the foot of the Eiger with the most amazing views imaginable!

Although we opted for the standard room, it was beautiful, a good size and best of all had a huge wrap-around balcony with views directly up to the Eiger. Very comfortable beds and we also had a fridge, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers. There was water in the fridge when we arrived though this wasn't replenished on a daily basis.

We stayed on a half-board basis and it was superb! The chef here is award-winning and it shows. Every dish was imaginative, tasty and presented beautifully!

We were not sure what to expect with the half-board option. We wondered if we would be ordering from the restaurants al a carte menu, with supplements added on for the more expensive dishes.... In actual fact there is a stunning 5 course menu specifically for those staying on half-board, which changed every day. An amuse-bouche followed by choice of two soups, then a choice of two salads, then mains (three options - meat, fish or vegetable) then a choice of two desserts....! We found it well worth the money.

Bear in mind though that the restaurant closes on a Wednesday, which we were not aware of. Those on half-board are instead offered a more basic dinner of fondue with lots of bread, potatoes, dried meat, vegetables and fruit, plus a simple salad starter and dessert. I was fine about this as I could not wait for my first taste of fondue and it was absolutely delicious! Just something you might want to bear in mind if you do pay for half-board on a Wednesday.

Good breakfasts taken in a stunning room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Grindelwald, the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn! Tea and coffee was a bit hard to get hold of though. Also, there was no hot option, although this didn't bother us at all as the breads, meats, cheese and pastries were delicious!

There was plenty of outdoor free parking. We rented a car and for us we found this more convenient as the hotel is about a 10 minute drive from Grund and the village. However there were buses passing the hotel all the time so a car isn't essential to get there.

We can't comment on the spa facilities as we were not brave enough to go nude :-) We wished we were though because based on the rest of the hotel I'm sure the spa is divine!

All in all it was a wonderful stay and quite frankly we can't wait to return!

Beautiful hotel 10 minutes out of Grindelwald but with free access to 20 bus to town. Amazing vistas from all rooms. Modern with beautiful whirlpool and health club. Restaurant excellent as well.

Only complaints were flies in the rooms in the evenings - no screens. Also staff was very cool and did not go out of their way to be helpful

Room Tip: All roms appear to be nice

First of all, the hotel is absolutely beautiful and the scenery around is breathtaking. The staff are all friendly and helpful. We had a small medical emergency and staff were helpful in getting numbers of doctors and pharmacies. The only downside is that the hotel is slightly far from Grindelwald center (you definitely need a car) and about an hour drive to Interlaken. But the train stop to Jungfrau is very near.

On a recent trip to Switzerland, my wife and I stayed at the Aspen Hotel in Grindelwald. Loved the hotel!!! Staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was very relaxing and allowed us to kick-back and take in the scenery. The views are spectacular.
The hotel is located about 7 min from the cute little ski town of Grindelwald. It overlooks the valley, as well as the surrounding mountains. The hotel is very modern inside an extremely clean. When you walk in the doors, you will be instantly smiling! I know I was....and this is coming from someone who runs a hotel as a GM in Canada.

A couple of things I would like them to improve on:

- No HVAC/Air Conditioning in the Room so had to sleep with door open all night.
- No Elevator if in the main lodge (Although they did offer to assist with luggage)
- I wish they had sheets on the bed, not just a duvet. When its hot, your only option should not be a duvet.
- Drive is a little long and difficult from Grindelwald, and without a GPS, it would be hard to find.

Other than that, we had a very good stay

Room Tip: As for a room with a balcony facing the Mountain (Front of Hotel) Worth every cent!

We spent less then one week in this Hotel. I would say that is under the normal expectation of a 4 stars hotel. For example, paper towels for dinner or lunch, waiters and waitress constantly forgot to bring us glass for our daughter or cutlery and our welcome was from a young receptionist that spent more time to clarify what was not allowed to do with children in the hotel, to pay attention to be quite and do not use the all the furniture in our suite because the owner doesn't agree (the suite has an owner and maybe they rent it?!?). The position is perfect for walking. Is not the best solution for family because is not the kind of structure organized for that. And the staff is quite impatient when has to do with children during the breakfast or the dinner that's not help to feel comfortable.

We stayed here for three nights with our young teen kids. We found the location of the hotel quite spectacular although it is away from the main town, but that was fine for us as we had a car to get around. We were welcomed quite well and shown the room and facilities but after that initial warmth, the rest of the time the staff were pretty aloof and cold. The flies were what took us completely by surprise. Did not know about this problem in Grindelwald. They bothered the life out of us especially at meal times and sleeping times. The rooms were very warm and if we opened the windows, we got bothered by the flies. I wish they would consider ceiling fans or table fans. In July it was by no means cool and one could do with air conditioners or fan. I could not sleep at all as I either I would get disturbed by the flies buzzing near my ears or I would be too hot. I did ask the reception to try and organize a fan and I was willing to pay for it, but I found their response very cold and they were certainly not even apologetic about shooting down my request. Customer is certainly not the king in almost any European hotel and service industry can learn a lot from hotels of same class in Asia. Prices are steep but service not necessarily proportionate. In Asia if you pay steep prices for a good quality hotel, the service and the willingness to try and make the guest as comfortable as possible is the top priority.
