Pros: Unsurpassed 360 views with little hiking effort.
Cons: it can get crowded so go early or late.

“Beautiful lake”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

This is a very popular lake as it's easy to get to from the Firstbahn cablecar and the walk is not hard so sometimes it can be quite busy, however it is a lovely lake with stunning backdrop.

“Beautiful Hike”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

One of the nicest hikes we took was from Grosse Sheidegg to First, and then from First to the Bachalpsee and then from there to Bort. You can get to the Grosse Sheidegg with a bus from Grindelwald. From there, it's an easy walk to First, less than two hours. In First you can get coffee, ice cream or even lunch at their restaurant before setting out on the second leg of the trip.
It's about an hour hike to the Bachalpsee -- the lake itself is beautiful -- and then from there you can either return to First or set out on another two hour walk to Bort. The walk isn't hard -- but it is downhill and you need good walking shoes. Halfway through there's a really nice chalet with great Apfelstrudel, so no need to go hungry
A lot of fun

“Bit too popular”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

Everyone does this there and back walk - the track was busy and although the lake was very pretty, the scenery in the other direction was better

“Average”
Reviewed July 24, 2013 via mobile

Totally average in my view but these things are a matter of taste.

First of all, it is a really long ascent walk up from grindelwald or a 31sfr ride from grindelwald to firstbahn. Too hard to walk but too expensive to pay!

Then, the walk from first is a 1hr walk on unpaved road...so not a proper hiking trail = lame.

You arrive at the lake and it looks okay, but nothing special in comparison to other Swiss lakes. Whoopdy doo.

What you should do however...is continue up the track to Faulhorn. Another 600m or so up...but the view changes completely so it's tres worth it. The weather changed on me while I was here (hail storm, rain, fog bonanza) so I couldn't see the whole view but what I could see was great. You can see bachalpsee, the jungfrau, Eiger etc looking back towards Grindelwald, and then behind the Faulhorn, the ground just drops away dramatically to a quite otherworldly landscape (at least in the fog it appeared that way).

So bachalpsee is okay but make the effort to get up to Faulhorn ...if I was coming back I would book a night here. The route also takes you to Schniyge Platte which is apparently great but I had to descend back to grindelwald to my hostel and didn't get there.
