“Full of Warmth”
Reviewed June 13, 2011

My mother and I stayed here for a couple of nights and we really felt as if we were welcomed into a family. We were always greeted with smiles and the owners never failed to offer us good and helpful suggestions whenever we went to them. The rooms are beautiful, cozy and clean. There is free wi-fi available and a little selection of books if you choose to spend the day in. We initially planned to have dinner once in the hotel and to try restaurants in town on other nights. But after sampling the food, we were more than happy to have our dinners in the hotel! On our day of departure, Gabriela kindly offered us a lift to the train station. Just before we set off, she dashed into the hotel and returned with 2 chocolate bars for our ride on the train. We really appreciate the gesture!

Although Grindelwald is quite expensive, this hotel is a bargain. Very clean and very hospitable staff make you feel welcome. Village center is just a couple of 100 meters away. Rooms are a little bit old-fashioned, but then again: they're cheap for Swiss standards! I got a nice corner room with a spectacular view on the Eiger, all-in for just 80 francs!

We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed every minute of our stay at the Gletschergarten. Our hosts were justifiably proud of their hotel and genuinely cared for their guests. We had a beautiful balcony room with a view of the mountains. Something we did not know until arrival is that they have a washer/dryer for guests. We initially planned to eat dinner in town but Gabriela and Gary were so accomodating that we at all our meals at their hotel. The food was excellent with impeccable service. This is a hotel that we hopefully will return to if ever in the area again.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room.

My husband Bill and I travel for a living and seldom am I impressed with a hotel's cleanliness, staff friendliness and all the creature comforts in-between. Gabriela and Gery go above and beyond to ensure that their guests have what they need for a wonderful stay. Every night I came back after exhausting myself with wonderful, long hikes only to be greeted warmly with "is there anything else you need?" I rated all aspects of our trip with excellent, what more can I say except go stay there and you will not be disappointed.

I was very happy with this place. They picked me, upgraded my room, suggested a ski rental shop, arranged my lift ticket at the desk, fed me well, and were gracious at every step. The hotel is over 100 years old but has been upgraded and is very clean and well kept. If you want a good place near town, but not in the center of it, choose this one. if you want a charming traditional spot, and a great value, choose this. It's not 5 star, or modern but I would come here again and send my friends and family here.

The Gletschergarten is now in the hands of the 3rd and 4th generations of owners, and is all a traditional Swiss hotel should be - the hosts were very friendly and obliging, and spoke good English; the hotel was well equipped and clean; and the food good. We felt very much 'at home' there.
