My fiancée and I spent one night at the Hotel Bernerhof. This was my second stay there - the first time was during my single days - so if it's a place to come back to once all grown up, it must be good, right?

The hotel is within a stone's throw from the Grindelwald train station, at the very centre of the mountain town. Compared to other accommodations the entrance is a bit out of the way, in that you have to go up a flight of stairs between a souvenir shop and a clothing store to find it, though the hotel itself, festooned with flowers in planters at every window, is readily spotted on the main road.

Our double room was a cozy size, with simple but high-quality furnishings. The bed was an ideal comfort for much-needed rest before and after hiking the many trails in the area. For a relatively-budget option (for a Swiss mountain resort town, that is), amenities like flat-screen cable television and a hair dryer in the bathroom were much appreciated. The bathroom was interestingly wood-floored, with a small shower. The best feature of all, however, was the balcony overlooking the main road, and the mountains beyond: a perfect spot for an après-hike glass of grappa and antipasto.

The buffet breakfast was hearty: fine breads, croissants, cold cuts, cheeses, eggs you can boil, coffee and juices. There was an odd welcome to the dining area as the manager asked to see our room key before we were allowed to seat - perhaps breakfast-crashing by non-guests is a problem given the very central location? There is also a Nespresso machine in the lounge area, with the whole range of capsules - try them all! - free and open during non-breakfast hours. A computer is available as well if you didn't have a laptop or smartphone to use the free wireless internet.

Overall, a simple, solid choice in an often-expensive mountain town.

We stumbled upon this hotel, as I was looking for a hotel near the train station that was somewhat affordable. The hotel is within view of the train station, and above some wonderful shops. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and fluent in English. I decided to upgrade to a room with a balcony & view of the Eiger, which was slightly more but worth it. The room is clean & decent sized-- 2 beds, a desk, a chair, and room for luggage. The sink is in the room, with tub and toilet in the shower. I actually like that fact. The Eiger view rooms face the main street, so there is a bit of noise, although the town rolls up the carpets after dark. There is an elevator to access the reception and upper floors. The WiFi is excellent. I booked directly with the hotel, which gave me a last-minute discount. The website has a good English version.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. Had expected small room and average comfort. Had a good size very comfortable room. Excellent proximity to Tain station and bus stop. Pay the extra money for room with a view of the Eiger. It is without doubt an amazing way to start and finish the day. Nice, friendly, helpful staff.

Convinient location about 50 m from the train station, good breakfast, a little bit noisy as the walls are very thin.
