Berghotel Grosse Scheidegg
Reviewed July 14, 2013 via mobile

Whilst hiking to grosse scheidegg we had very little other options, in fact I think this is the only place to stay. The prices are quite a lot for what was essentially a hostel. The food wasn't great even after hiking and the fact there wasn't a shower when paying the amount they charge isn't really understandable. The views from the hotel are amazing but given a choice I would stay somewhere else.

We were having a day out, intending to do the walk from Grosse Scheidegg to First, but this was still closed by snow (end May 2013). So we called in at the only restaurant up there - the Berg Hotel.
The typically Swiss menu was fairly priced (by Swiss standards) considering the location - i.e. similar prices to down in Grindlewald. Unfortunately we were too late at 2.45pm to be able to sample the full menu - only simple snacks are on offer outside main lunch and dinner times.
But the home made Hungarian Goulash was hot, filling and perfectly good for a freezing cold day with the snow falling. Service was friendly and prompt. The owners speak only very limited` English. In fine summer weather this would be a lovely hiking location - reached by hourly bus from Grindlewald. With hindsight we would suggest bus up, hike back down - the return fare from Grindlewald was a steep SWF46 each (less with regionalpass or half fare card), but the drive is spectacularly scenic.

We stayed here while hiking part of the Swiss Alpine Route. We stayed in the annex located a few dozen feet from the main building. The annex is new, and the three double rooms share a shower and bath. The rooms are quite comfortable. The shower runs out of hot water quickly, so if you're not the first or second person taking a shower in the morning, you are out of luck. (And in Switzerland, the unheated water is COLD!) I had tried to make a reservation well before our arrival date, and had lots of difficulty. Multiple E-Mails were not answered and multiple faxes were ignored; it took 3 phone calls to finally get someone to write it down. They would not send a confirmation. After all that, when we arrived, they had the dates wrong! No harm was done since they had room, however. The food was good, although the service was a bit surly. It could be a great place ... but is just OK now.
