We stayed at the Derby hotel for 3 nights. The rooms are spacious and clean albeit a little dated but that doesn't even matter when your view is so incredible. We enjoyed just sitting on our little deck just taking in the sights. Would definitely reccomend if you are staying in Grindewald.

The Derby is located 'behind' the Grindelwald train station. That being said, the location is wonderful but you have to accept the fact you will hear all the noises associated with the trains. Derby is a traditional family owned & operated hotel. The bus stop is a mere three blocks away. Our ski club group stayed on the half-board plan(breakfast and dinner included). All of the dinners were delicious with a very good breakfast buffet every morning. The hotel is spotlessly clean and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Nearly all of the hotel staff speak English. My room was rather small but comfortable with tiny bathroom/shower. Skis are not permitted in the building, the ski room is accessable from behind the hotel. No hot tub or pool on site. However, as a guest of the Derby you are allowed to swim in the village Olympic size pool (with diving boards and water slide) just three blocks away, near the bus stop. During your stay make sure you make a reservation for fondue night in the Cava (in the keller, that is, the basement).

My husband and I stayed in the Derby in January 13 for 3 nights. I would have to say the location is excellent and that overall we had a pleasant stay. On the plus side the room was sunny and perfectly adequate with comforts like a bathtub, minibar, safe etc. The breakfast buffet was great with lots to choose from. The owner and the receptionists were very friendly. Shame the same can't be said for who i think must be the head of housekeeping. We arrived very early for check in as we had a special deal which included a ski pass for that day and we of course wanted to make use of the pass and get up the mountains early. The receptionist called housekeeping to see if a room was ready for us. She said it was ready and we were given our key and given directions to our room. As we got out of the lift and went to go into the room, the head of housekeeping screamed at us very rudely from the other end of the corridor that the room was not actually ready and that we couldn't go in. Now i don't mind that a mistake was made, these things happen and i don't mind either that the room was not ready as we had checked in early. But i do mind being screamed at like we had done something wrong when it was her mistake. If she had of politely apologized and said that unfortunately there had been a misunderstanding and that the room was not free after all, then we would have been just fine with that. It's a shame she was so rude and unprofessional as a bit of friendliness of her part would have made all the difference.
My only other minor gripe is that upon checking out we asked if we could store our luggage in the hotel somewhere as we were going snowboarding again that day. They said that was fine and we left our bags with them by the reception. Upon arriving back in the evening, we saw that our bags which still just there by the reception were they could have been taking by anyone who walked into the lobby. As we both had ipads and other valuables in the suitcases, we were a bit upset that they couldn't have taken a bit more care and put them into a secure room somewhere.

Booked the Derby for a week skiing the region with Crystal Ski. Upgraded to a south facing room with a view of the Eiger and a balcony/bath for relatively little (admittedly we did get a bargain).

We were booked into room 216 which was perfectly fine. The bathroom, although very dated in decor was perfectly servicable. The bedroom was big enough - plenty of hanging space for clothes etc. The 'double' was actually two large singles pushed together which seems to be the norm across Europe. The beds were very comfortable with lovely feather quilts and pillows (these were a little too soft for my comfort but that's a personal thing). There is a safe and fridge (stocked but rather expensive) in the room - we filled this with our own items without any problem.

Room 216 was next to one of the two lifts which was a concern at first as I am a light sleeper. However we heard absolutely nothing noise wise until the lift developed a fault on our 4th night (overheating thermostat that caused a low rumbling noise constantly). Unfortunately I had a bad nights sleep (not lift related) and as the noise continued the next day, requested a change of room which was sorted immediately. The staff could not do enough and even offered to move us whilst we were out for lunch but we declined and moved very quickly without any problems. I was extremely impressed by the level of service and concern shown by staff to this matter and can only compliment the hotel on the way it was dealt with.

We moved to room 224 at the end of the corridor which was dual aspect. The bathroom had been renovated and was lovely and modern so this was a nice surprise.

The only small downside is that to have a view of the Eiger you are overlooking a road so you do hear car noise during the day - this was non-existent at night so you can sleep with a window open. However, the view does override any small irritations. A tip - the higher you are in the hotel the better the view around buildings across the road.

We stayed on a half board basis - continental breakfast and 5 course evening meals. Breakfast was fine as we were still stuffed from the night before and I eventually went down to 2 or 3 courses for dinner as it was just too much food. Although there was no choice with meals, all evenings had something we liked so that was fine. The house wines were perfectly drinkable and significantly cheaper than the bottles sold in the restaurant. In fact the bar prices, compared to other hotels nearby were very reasonable, for Switzerland that is.

We did 'exchange' dinner for a fondue evening in the Cava Restaurant one evening but it wasn't the greatest experience. The one main waiter seemed to be overworked and there was very little attention given to service or the experience that evening. Reading other reports, I'm guessing this was just an off evening. In relation to the normal dining experience, all the staff were fantastic but our special thanks go to Gianni who really looked after us all week and I hope she had a lovely holiday back at home with family.

We have skied all over Europe and beyond and stayed in Wengen four times before so know the region well. For an all round experience, staying at the Derby has got to be one of the best. With the train outside or bus a very short walk away, the slopes beckoned. It's often the little things that make the difference and from the very warm welcome to the little gifts left in the room and on leaving really make the difference. We are looking forward to eating our chocolate and cheese very soon.

We will most definately be back!

Room Tip: The higher the better for an uninterrupted view of the Eiger

We just returned from a 10 night stay at the Derby Hotel in Grindelwald, Switzerland. The first and most obvious advantage of staying at the Derby is it's proximity to the trains. It is right at the end of the rail line. You get off the train and walk right into the Derby. Everyone at the front desk was extremely helpful with any questions we had, and there were many! The room was perfect and the maid came everyday to tidy up. We had a room with a balcony that faced the Eiger, which is breath taking. The food and service in the restaurants in the hotel were also excellent, especially a server named Anna. She went above and beyond for us and we were and are very grateful. Everyone who works there speaks English so it was easy to communicate. I do not have enough room to express how awesome our stay was and we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Eiger have a breath taking view of the mountain.

My first stay at The Derby was in 1995 and I have been back 10 times since then. This is a Swiss Family Style Hotel with the highest standard of service. The location is second to none as you have access to every ski area in the Jungfrau Region and The Country of Switzerland outside the front doorstep of The Derby. The Train is so quiet however, you wouldn't even know it was there. The Restaurant serves a superb 5 course dinner in a beautiful dining room with service that will keep you smiling all week. As far as Grindelwald goes, I've skied all over the States, British Columbia, France, Austria and Italy. Simply put, Grindelwald has it all for skiers and non-skiers. First and foremost, Grindelwald has the most beautiful scenery in the World! There are endless excursions for everyone in this winter wonderland. After 11 trips I am still finding new terrain to ski. To the staff of The Derby, I would like to say Thank You for making dreams come true! You are Simply The Best!

we have been coming to the Derby for the better part of 14 years.. we have brought large groups and have traveled as a couple. We have never had a bad experience here. The train is not an issue and is in fact very convienient for travel to the ski areas. The hotel itself keeps the family swiss chalet atmosphere that i want when i travel here. The staff is wonderful and is always accomodating. for anyone wanting brand new modern surroundings.. stay home no place will ever satisfy you. The Derby and the people that work there are the reason we keep coming back. The trains stop fairly early and there are no night clubs nearby that would cause excess noise after hours. I am already making my reservations for next year.

Room Tip: We always ask for a room which faces the Eiger..... It is such a beautiful mountain.
