Downtown Lodge
Reviewed July 30, 2014 via mobile

The Downtown lodge has a nice location, helpful staff and decent free breakfast. The rooms are dorm style and a little worn, but clean. The bathrooms appear clean as well. There are decent facilities to use as well: kitchen, gameroom, bikes (free for an hour). I thought I was getting a good deal until you get here and see the sign out front which is way cheaper than what we made reservations for... so maybe take your chances and do the walk up?

I really liked this place on my trip. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The place is huge with loads of dorms, they all appear clean and comfortable.

Great Budget option in the middle of Grindelwald.

We stayed for a weekend as a group of 30 hikers. It was easy to organize thanks to the staff, who was very communicative before arrival.

The rooms are nice, but as we were there in November with -10°C outside, it got quite cold inside the rooms. The heating is not very powerful for so low temperatures which are common in Grindelwald during winter. When having shower, apparently the hot water ran out and some people had to wait for a long while until being able to have a hot shower. We were at least 20 people having shower at the same time in a lodge designed for around 60 people maximum.

If they offer you a lunch/dinner deal in their associated restaurant, bear in mind that it is a 20-25 minutes walk!

The staff was helpful and nice and the price was unbeatable for Grindelwald.

We stayed here for 2 nights in May 2013. The staff was very friendly. It has everything that you need for a short stay. There is a restaurant, bar, and a room to watch movies.(U have to pay to rent a movie though)

We stayed in a quad room as there were 4 of us and the room was clean. The hostel is located within walking distance of train, hiking, restaurants, city center. The view is incredible, surrounded by mountains.

Toilets could be improved though, in terms of location and cleanliness. We stayed in the main lodge and to get to the main shower facility we had to walk from our room through the bar/restuarant area. I think there was a game on one of the nights we were there and we had to use the other shower facility which only had one shower together with the shared toilet, as we were too embarrassed to walk through the bar carrying all our shower stuff.

Basically everything you need for a clean, cheap place to stay for the night. Nothing fancy.

The staff were friendly and the rooms had a bunk bed. Room size was medium. It is near the railway station. Breakfast was fine. The only problem is the system of shared bathroom. Also the bathrooms are not very nice. For a budget hotel, it is fine. They also have luggage lockers.

Verdict,
For Budget Travellers only

During our 2 days stay here there was no hot water in the bathroom. All the guest need to bath with icy cold water after a long day activities in sub zero weather. When we called up receptionist (ya, have to use phone to call as the reception is closed at 8pm and no one there to help you!) the only reply that I got is they will check it on the next day morning. They don't even offer other washrooms to us. There were about 10 guest that time but only 1 mixed toilet is available. Please avoid this hostel unless you don't need hot water for shower and you don't mind paying a lot of money for a mixed toilet.

go to the other hostel in grindelwald. we used to go in budget accomodations but re the noise you could also sleep on a highway. 130 chf for two persons, no sleep and mixed toilets is a joke, sorry. The double room is direct close to the main door, toilets and the main room. you can hear everything between the whole night looooooooong. need more details, hate sleep and have to much money? then go for it!
