“Lovely hotel! Superb location, wonderful staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2010

We stayed at the Regina with a large group of extended family and our two young boys this summer. The hotel is lovely, and the staff went out of their way to accomodate us - every day they would suggest activities that our children might enjoy (that we wouldn't have known about otherwise) The hotel has a very unique spa area that is truly amazing, with multiple sauna's, steam rooms and pools. The outdoor garden has perhaps one of the prettiest views of the Alps I've ever seen. There are two pools, one indoors and one outdoors. The outdoor pool is very warm and the experience of swimming in that warm pool in the cool mountain air while looking up at the magnificence of the Eiger was unforgetable. We looked at the other "nicer" hotels in town and none can compare to the Regina in either price, value, decor, or luxury. It was a wonderful stay at a beautiful hotel and we'll be back for sure.

you will get down from the train and you will find the hotel right in front of your eyes ... First you will see the hotel and then suddenly you will notice the big snowy mountains behind the hotel .. and you will immediately fall in love with that ..
Hotel staff is so courteous, friendly, helpful that you will not find anywhere ..
Rooms are amazingly spacious, you will find royal silver cutleries on your table ...
Bathroom has all golden fittings ..
everything looks so good that you cant imagine ...
Hotel has its own spa, swimming pool, and other amenities ...

One would definitely think of going there again in future ..

Hotel location excellent and views out of the back of the hotel very nice. Room was reasonable size, bed comfortable, and bathroom modern. However...the staff was not attentive; dinner service was very slow; the towels were very thin and small; the bathrobes were well worn; the rugs were thread bare; the overall hotel seemed "tired and past its prime"; had to pay extra for Internet use and front desk staff did not have much knowledge of how to use it. Overall, very disappointing for price paid. Would not consider this a 5 star hotel in comparison to other 5 star properties where we have stayed.

We have recently returned from a week in this hotel. The situation is great. It is definitely worth paying a premium for a south facing room with views of the Eiger. The shower was over the bath [as pictured by previous reviewer] but functioned very well. The staff are all extremely friendly & helpful. Breakfasts are fine [did not have the best muesli] . The evening meals were wonderfully cooked & presented. The spa was also excellent but lacked a jacuzzi [an outdoor one with views of the Eiger would be a great idea]. The swimming pool was big enough to swim lengths.

Never stay at this hotel. It is a complete fraught. This is not a 5-star hotel – far from it. It has not received any decent investment in 30+ years and is dingy and broken. It feels like a cheap, lower middle class home that tries to pretend it is luxurious, but fails. More detail below/pcitures are attached:
• The lobby is a hodgepodge of worn furniture and carpets that have not been updated in 30 years. But most disturbing is the coffin in the lobby. I first thought that the fake flower arrangement on it – immediately recognizable as a funeral bouquet – was just another style faux pas. But stepping closer, it became obvious that the remains of the owner’s relative are on display here. That alone should be enough to turn you off, but let me go on.
• The much advertised terrace off the lobby is clearly not as grand as the pictures will make you believe. Unless you are seated at one of 2 tables your view is a rusty roof or a parking lot. Under the terrace is a noisy street. This place has nothing of the serenity conveyed in the pictures.
• The much-advertised wellness and pool area is reached via a dirty walkway and a freight elevator – it clearly could not have been intended for the general public given its lack of internal doors and its sparse interior. Beyond that it only gets worse. The wellness area has a distinct 1970’s feel from its furniture and wear. Stepping out of the building onto the terrace is like stepping onto a parking lot in front of an abandoned supermarket. The concrete is cracked and weeds are growing freely from the crevices. The manhole covers stick out. The pool area looks like a disaster zone. The concrete is chipped and the paint flakes off. The wading pool has no water. Buckets under poolside stone seating contain pool service chemicals.
• Our room (CHF1,200/night) was a throwback to a 1970’s middle class attic conversion. You reached the room over a wood/metal staircase and a dark corridor. The elevators did not reach up to the attic. The “suite” consisted of a large room separated by a temporary partition that separates a bedroom area from a living area. The room did not feel luxurious or quaint. It was hardly luxurious when it was put in place. It just felt worn and dingy. Paint wass peeling of doors and windows.
• The bathroom was small and dark, so small in fact that the toilet was in a cubbyhole at the entrance to the room. There was no shower. The bathtub had a screen (like when people want to make a shower out of their bathtub). But instead of a proper shower, there was a handheld showerhead. There was not enough space for a proper shower in this bathtub. The paint was peeling from the window.
• One feature in the room that provided us great headache was the lighting. On our return late that night, the ceiling lights in the room were on, but we couldn’t find the switch to turn them off. We called the front-desk to help us. The night porter was at first reluctant to come up, since he was the only staff person in the hotel. Finally, he came and searched for 10 minutes for the switch. When he also couldn’t find it, he called per phone another person, who showed up 15 minutes later and also searched for 10 minutes for the switch without success. After almost an hour of searching for the light switch (it was now past midnight), I looked for the switch box to disable the light. The personnel was dead set against that, but did not have a better idea. When I found the switch box and opened it, I found the light switches for the ceiling lights!
• The hotel staff and owner were outright hostile when we shared with them the shortfalls of the hotel. I expected them to accept graciously our reluctance to stay for a second night, like every other high class hotel would have done. Instead they did not offer any acknowledgement of our issues, nor an apology. On our way out, we had to bring our own luggage down the stairs (remember our floor could not be reached by elevator) to the entrance and loaded it ourselves into our car with no help from the staff who stood-by.
AVOID THIS HOTEL!!!

We stayed for 3 nights. We were upgraded from a senior double room to a junior suite. A very friendly welcome from the staff.
The suite was decorated in what might be called 'modern alpine'. The bathroom was outstanding and had every possible amenity. The only complaint about the suite was that there were no comfortable chairs to relax in. The two designer type leather chairs seemed to be more for looks than use.
A very good buffet breakfast was served each morning.
The indoor pool and spa facilities were very good. The outdoor pool was still empty but that was understandable so early in the summer season.
I first stayed here 40 years ago and then several times in the 1970's. This hotel has moved with the times but also managed to retain its special atmosphere.
We cannot understand why this hotel is so poorly rated compared with other Grindelwald hotels. It is not cheap but quality does come at a price and this hotel is very good value for money. For our stay in Grindelwald we were joined by a friend who stayed at the more highly rated Fischerblick. Much much cheaper but, by comparison, very poor value for money

We were there for a conference during a spell of beautiful weather. We stayed in a suite in the Regina Haus annex. We had a huge living room with balcony facing the Eiger, two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchenette. One bathroom was equipped with a huge whirlpool tub and illuminated glass sink. The bed linens were silky Egyptian cotton. The decor was a little dated but very high quality and not shabby or worn.
We have never stayed in a hotel with such service. The staff came twice a day to clean, empty trash and tidy up. The first day my husband left some clothes in a heap and he returned to find them nicely folded. Since the elevators are so small, they deliver your bags to your room directly from the train station. We had several early morning meetings so we ate breakfast at 6:30 am. Even at that hour the breakfast was fully staffed with a manager briskly directing the very professional waiters. On top of the usual breads and yogurt, they had scrambled eggs , bacon ,sausage, broiled tomatoes. The croissants came hot out of the oven. A very special place.

  • Liked — service, views
  • Disliked — Route to the room was complicated via two elevators
