We were on a whirlwind trip of Switzerland. On our last day we were driving through Grindelwald and stopped for dinner while soaking in the magnificent peaks covered with snow and kissed with sunshine - when we came across Alte Post. The menu outside looked very interesting and not so expensive as the rest of Switzerland. We ordered the pork and the chicken schnitzel and while we waited for our order, we passed our time drinking beer and gazing at our magnificent surroundings. We realised that the it was family-owned and was buzzing with locals deep in conversation over dinner. It also has a hotel located behind the restaurant. Of course there were lots of tourists as well and most were staying at the hotel. The restaurant has a lovely sit-out in the front where we sat for some time and soaked in our beautiful surroundings. But then it became a little cold, so we moved inside which was equally lovely cosy and warm.
And now for the special bit - the food was excellent!!! It was extremely tasty, flavourfull and cooked perfectly. The sauces were amazing. And the best thing was that it felt homemade and was without pretension. Not to forget the dessert - the meringue with ice cream and whipped cream combination was sinful but awesome!
The hostess was friendly and courteous and made us feel very comfortable. She looked after us very well and the overall service was very good.
It was indeed superbly swiss - the ambience, the people, the location and the food. And given that it was our last day, it rounded off our swiss experience beautifully! There is also a convenient car park located nearby.
Although there was one thing - there were way too many flies inside and outside the restaurant which strangely didn't seem to bother the owners!!! I wish they would sort this out... I only hope this problem does not exist in the hotel behind...
