We took the cable car from Grindelwald up to First (pronounced "Fierst"), and then took a relatively easy 5 km (3 mi) hike to Grosse Scheidegg. It's a well signed path, easy to follow. Large parts of the path are crushed stone utility roads, but there are some sections where the path is just trampled down grass. Not much elevation change, so good for novice hikers. Once you get to Grosse Scheidegg, you catch a bus down the hairpin road back into Grindelwald. The views from the path of the village and of Eiger & surrounding mountains are spectacular.
