We took the cable car from Grindelwald up to First (pronounced "Fierst"), and then took a relatively easy 5 km (3 mi) hike to Grosse Scheidegg. It's a well signed path, easy to follow. Large parts of the path are crushed stone utility roads, but there are some sections where the path is just trampled down grass. Not much elevation change, so good for novice hikers. Once you get to Grosse Scheidegg, you catch a bus down the hairpin road back into Grindelwald. The views from the path of the village and of Eiger & surrounding mountains are spectacular.

It is really wonderful mountain with amazing view of surrounded mountains such as Eiger. You can reach to the First’s top (around 2,168 meter) by Cable Car (long, 4 stations) from Grindelwald village. If you have Swiss Pass, you will be eligible for 50% discount and will cost around 21 CHF.

If the weather is good, the views from here are second to none in Switzerland. The restaurant at the top of the cable car is as good as any mountain restaurant and the terrace has fantastic views. If you feel adventurous, you could take the First flyer down to the next cable car station (sitting in a harness and descending on a zip wire). The prices are expensive for the cable cars and the flyer, but combination tickets can be bought. Also, go onto the Jungfraubahn Facebook page and like - they offer half price tickets on selected dates.
First is a great place to start hikes, but be prepared for long descents. You need good footwear, good weather proof gear and be reasonably fit.

Grindelwald in the heartland of the Bernese Oberland District in the swiss alps. The Eiger Mountain towers over this great village, and most months of the year it does have snow on the upper slopes. You can travel from this pretty village by cable car to the top of Mannlichen. Also the train goes from the grindelwald station to the jungfrauj top,via Kleinne Scheideg.Go to top and see the rhone glacier. The village of grindelwald has so much to keep you fully occupied, plus also regular train service to the beautiful town of Interlaken, here you can do all your shopping needs. So grindelwald has to be one of the most beautiful places on this planet, like another planet. So go and enjoy the time in grindelwald and the entire vally, you will love it i am sure.

There are two good ways to visit First from Grindelwald - by foot or by cable car. We went by cable car up to First (CHF 31 for one-way trip). Then we walked to Bachalpsee, and then we walked down to Grindelwald. It took about 6-7 hours from Grindelwald and back again, but we were also stopping up alot to look at the view, founa and flora. We were eating our packed lunch at Bachalpsee with the wonderfull view on the mountains.
I would recommend to take the cable-car oneway if you like a good walk down (or up) from the mountain (it was a bit hard to walk down so much, but we coundn't afford a both way ticket, and we liked the long walk). This is a place I would like to visit again sometime :)
