Reviewed March 20, 2009

I have stayed here twice now (august 2006 and 2007), and plan to come back again this year (2009). The location can't be beaten when you are looking for quiet. It lies on a barely trafficked road between the Grund and Grindelwald stations, has its own parking area, and is still within easy walking distance to anything you need in the village, including various transportation.
It is a normal 3 star hotel with rooms that aren't up to date when considering design, but they are adequate enough, and the ones with balcony facing the Eiger have indeed a splendid view, even though the hotel is not far above the valley floor. I will never forget the first revelation of the snow capped peak of the Eiger above the morning fog, towering 3000 metres above the hotel.
Be aware of the bathroom fan, which only works while the lights are switched on (a power saving feature I am sure, although not nose saving :)
Breakfast is adequate although not abundant. I am a happy bunny when I can choose from a variety of cereals w/nuts, juices, some bread, ham, cheese, eggs, tea and coffee and all this is present.
Hotel staff is courteous and a bit reserved, but I expect this from germanic culture :)
The village of Grindelwald is a top choice for the Berner Oberland region - of the ones I have seen, it is by far the most well situated and picturesque, lying in a wide open green valley with imposing mountains on most sides. And this is of course why people come here - to enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery, which is so far second to none other that I have seen.
The possibilities for trips and walks are abundant - take the cogwheel train up to Kleine Scheidegg (2061 m) and admire the Eiger (3970 m), Mönch (4099 m) and Jungfrau (4158 m). Be awed by the 1800 m north wall of the Eiger, a real challenge for mountain climbers, and a tomb for many. Take the Jungfraubahn further up to the 'top of Europe' - the highest railroad station in Europe, Jungfraujoch at 3454 m, then take the elevator to the Sphinx viewing point at 3571 m - getting this high has never been any simpler! And do remember to consider the height before running up and down the stairs.
Take the Männlichenbahn from Grund up to 2225 metres and walk 'der Klassiker' to Kleine Scheidegg - past the local cows' church bells and along the dramatic cliffsides of the Tschüggen while all the time going straight towards the Jungfrau massif. Enjoy a lunch outside on the Restaurant Grindelwaldblick before returning by the train back to Grindelwald, or catch the train halfway down at Alpiglen, but be warned that the gravel path is quite steep at times.
Take the cable car to First (2168 m), walk to the Bachalpsee at 2165 m, or even all the way to Faulhorn (2685 m), then walk back to First and either take the cable car all the way down or walk halfway down to Bort to catch it there - even steeper than the walk to Alpiglen. Alternatively, go to Grosse Scheiddegg and catch the Grindelwaldbus or Postauto back to Grindelwald.
Drive to Interlaken and enjoy the charming bits of the village, hotel Victoria, the Casino or perhaps the cable car to Harder Kulm with magnificent views over the two lakes - Brienzersee and Thunersee.
Drive to Wildersvil or take the train down there, then take the cogwheel train to Schynige Platte (1967 m), and admire the Berner Oberland alps from further away. If you are adventurous, try the 6 hour walk from here to First but don't forget the altitude..
Visit Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, Wengen and the Trümmelbachfälle - all doable in one day. And don't forget to drop by Gletscherschlucht - a very loud and very impressive 1 km walk straight inside a deep, narrow gorge that feels more like a grotto at times.
This area is the peak of everything I have seen so far in Switzerland, which is now quite a few places, and I am already looking forward to return here - and to Hotel Glacier.
